Hi, I recently bought a boat with a few friends of mine that we keep at Marina del Rey in LA. We are all from New Zealand and have done plenty of fishing there but have little experience here. So we are looking for an experienced guide / fisherman to come out fishing with us and help us learn the local area / techniques etc.

Can anyone point us to any experienced LA fisherman / charter guides, preferably in Marina del Rey, that we could reach out to?

We are looking to target yellowtail and bass (rather than baitfishing the bottom for what we hear called 'rockfish'), but are open to learning how to target as many species as possible. Generally, we just want to have a good time when we go out and catch a few fish!

We have a 25" Robalo center console boat with a 250HP Mercury outboard. Areas we will fish in are the entire Santa Monica Bay from PV to Malibu and also occasionally to Catalina (but we want to learn closer spots for half day trips).

We're happy to pay for the privilege of learning obviously :-) and want it to be something we can do repeatedly as we learn more and more about the local area and conditions.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Welcome to California, I grew up here in Southern California , but I'm not really an expert or a guide regarding the local salt water sport fishing. Here are a couple of websites that might help you out.
This site shows the ocean temps and has some the of the well know areas/ waypoints for fishing on it - http://www.tempbreak.com/
This local fishing publication is really good for fishing reports and techniques - http://www.wonews.com
Two More - http://www.socaloceanfishing.com/hi_spots.html
http://www.sportfishsandiego.com/yellowtail-tips.html

YouTube is another great resource you can check out.

Best of Luck!

Welcome to SoCal! Another website you could try is BloodyDecks.com It's a little bit different atmosphere over there but there are some phenomenal private boaters there, and that's what it sounds like you want. Best of luck!

This guy is on the radio show "Let's Talk Hookup" all the time. He will go on your boat with you, and teach you how to use all your fancy electronics and also how to catch fish. It says he will come to Marina Del Rey to guide you!!!!!!
