Man I love me some DVL. With the water level up the lake is so much fun to fish right now. Spent the entire day in Rawson's and picked up where I left off. Put a good hurting on them, it was steady action all day long.

Morning started off with great cloud cover, thought I'd be able to get some to go with topwater or spinnerbait but didn't happen this time. Strange because the water seemed prime for a good reaction bite. Soft plastics was the call however. Brush hog, fluke, ika, senko, and big worms all produced. Did the most damage with the 10" worm fished through the submerged brush. Every fish was caught in 15ft or less, and all were in the brush.

Also lost a monster preggo bluegill as I was trying to grab it next to the boat. Thing looked like a frying pan and had a huge mouth, so big that it was able to inhale a fat ika with a 3/0 EWG hook. Bummed that I wasn't able to snap a few pics of that sucker before releasing. Guess I made up for it by incidentally hooking up with a 5lb trout, also on the ika. So to summarize the ika doesn't discriminate.

Ended the day with around 20. Some clones, some 4's, a 5, and last fish of the day went just under 7lbs. I was in the "one more fish before I go" mode and literally had 10 mins left before I had to head in. I got hung up in the brush and was trying to shake my worm free then all of a sudden felt head shakes and was doubled over with a nice fish instead. Sweet deal. Awesome day on the water today, SoCal style.

SD will always be home, miss living there and fishing the lakes down there. I enjoy keeping up with the action down that way. The SD fish forum is very interactive, entertaining, and informative. Hey we tried resurrecting this forum, maybe it's past the point of no return

No this forum is not past the point of no return. (it actually may get better then it ever was) My logic is this, the negativity is all but gone. So when someone posts a report and only get's positive feed back, that will encourage the OP to do it again!!!! Other people will see the Big Bad Wolves are gone and post their own reports. Creating a positive upward cycle!!!! It just takes time for people to feel safe again in writing fish reports.

DVL can be a cruel mistress at times if you aren't A)Very lucky or B) Very experienced there.

Hopefully you are correct, only time will tell. Being pressured by outside sources is ridiculous, it's just fishing. Whether you have a good outing or not it's all welcomed info. No ones forcing you to share your hot spots or baits, that's completely your choice. I think people just hold DVL close to their vest, whether it be they're tourney anglers or they feel disclosing info will do a disservice to themselves.

Thanks Brent, yeah the learning curve at DVL can be steep. Once you put the time in it can be very rewarding, and a lot of fun.

Thank you sir. It's sad to see the state of this forum now as I've learned a deal of knowledge about DVL here back in the day. What can ya do. Tight lines bud!

OG MUDBONE,

I am in a small bass club in the Inland Empire and our club Secretary was talking with Kwin about the impacts of our bass fishing on the lake carrying capacity. Kwin said that bass fishing virtually has very little if any impact at all on the LMB population. His reasoning was that we practice catch & release and that during each spawn there are millions of fry hatched out. He said that if those fry don't get to +/- 6" in length before winter that they won't survive. He indicated that it takes about 2 years for a LMB to reach 12" in length. And at that length they pretty much eat all of the fry. He is a proponent of increasing the LMB limit from 2 @ 15" to 5 @ 12" to reduce the number of smaller fish that over feed the habitat.

With all of that being said, it is surprising how secretive everyone is about how they catch their fish. Most all of us don't eat them, just want to catch them!

Um, almost got it right.
Millions if not billions of fry are hatched out each year negating any need to close the fishery during the spawn (which was the response to the initial question posed to me). The regulating factor in fry survival is generally they have to transition away from eating bugs and plankton and get to around 6" before the onset of winter when aquatic weeds die off and the lake flips to avoid predation and have more/better feeding options. All of the fry are not eaten if there is adequate habitat, food and growth rates. Excessive catch and release and water fluctuations can alter these components in a negative manner independently or in aggregate.

Most of our lakes would benefit greatly from more selective harvest to improve growth rates so I am in favor of reverting Perris back to a 12"/5 fish bag limit to increase harvest there once the lake refills. I am targeting Perris for this change as that is how it was prior to the drawdown and for other species management plans within the lake.

Kwin,

Thank you for clarifying my erroneous recollection of your discussion with my buddy. It had been sometime since he had shared your conversation with me and my "senior mind" had a little trouble stating it correctly.

Also, I want thank you for the service you provide to us anglers. It is greatly appreciated!
