View Full Version : 15 or 20lb test too light for 3/4 day Newport Landing?

We're headed out tomorrow and I realized I don't have any heavier line.
Will 15 or 20lb be enough?

Also, what kind of terminal tackle setup should I use?
I'm planning on using a c-rig w/ 2oz egg and size 1 or 2 hook.
Will that suffice?

It's been AGES since I've been on an open party boat.

Thanks

It depends on what you're going to be fishing. 15-20 is more than enough for shallow(50-100ft.) rockfishing. Deeper than that, you might have some problems.

If you're fishing deep, 20lb. minimum is what I recommend.

Just go to the landing, as how deep you will be fishing, and decide from there.

Also, if you guys try for yellowtail, which is highly unlikely, but if you do, have a nice ride.

Thanks SanDimas, I think I'll bring 2 setups, 15 and 20lb.

Got any suggestions on tackle? :secret:

if u going bottom fishing which is maybe likely bur get some 8-12 ounce torpedo sinkers
have egg sliders if u got to catalina which is most likely because i saw they where catching bonito and calicos

so 15-20 lb is fine for that fishing

Also, just ask for some leadheads like the ones below. Just pin on a squid and control the drop and you'll get bit in all layers of the water column. Also, if macks become a nuisane, just drop own past them and then start fishing.

Lol.

As for where it came from, I don't know. Its almost 11pm. and I'm trying to do my japanese homework. I keep on thinking the season is being extended because there are still some tuna being caught down in SD

15-20 is fine. If you fish deep (150-200+), as you very well might, 15-20lb line will stretch considerably and will drop ur hooksetting powa. If you dont mind that, then dont worry. If you do mind, bring heavier tackle (or circle hooks).
Depending on how fast the boat drifts you can match these weight depths
50ft-100ft.......1-2 oz leadheads (casting), 4 oz drop
100-150 ft........2-3 oz LH (casting), 6 oz drop
150-200 ft........casting? still? 3 oz at least, 6-8 oz drop
200+ ft...........the only thing ull be casting is a tangle spell on everyone else. Also, the way youll be sliding, you wont be fishing effectively since youll have about 400 feet of line out before you hit bottom. It MIGHT work, if you cast ahead of the slide, and FAR, otherwise, 8-12+ oz drop.

try not to have the line drift under the boat if you are going towards the lighter sinker size, if you are going light, fish so the line goes away from you.

i dont know, this is kind of overkill. Im pretty sure u already know all this...
have fun

I used 14 oz. the last I went rockfishing. 2 ounces too heavy. IMHHO. :x

If you're fishing anything else, what Nick said.

All this tackle talk has got me Jones'ing to wet a line.
