not so great Eastern Sierra Fishing Report

I was in Bishop this past weekend and my first stop is always to get a sandwich at the Meat House and some lures and advice at Culvers Sporting goods. I was saddend to see the sign at Culvers say he is going out of business and will only be open Monday through Friday. I always got friendly service from the owner.

As far as the fishing goes, the water levels were high on the Owens and the water was dark. Water was flowing around 400/450 I believe. Surprisingly on Friday there were a lot of bait fisherman on the Owens, but none reported catching much. On Friday I caught 3 rainbows and a brown near hwy 6. All released. was using size 9 panther martins.

On Saturday I hit PVR and got nothing. PVR was very crowded, constant flow of fisherman coming in. Fished a few other spots on the Owens and caught 1.

Slow weekend but a great time was had.

Even more water will be coming down the pike in coming months as snow melt starts coming in. Fishing the owens at that flow rate is pretty discouraging. You did well under the circumstances.

I'll be comin South through there .. at the end of the month ... on the way to do a funeral in Hollywood. Was wondering if I should plan a stop. Interesting that you should mention the "Meat Shop." Never heard of it. Better than Schat's ... or the place on 395 across from the Indian casino???

When my dad started us fishing in the 50's it was always a mandatory stop at Jack's and Mac's. Wonder how long they'll be open.

it all depends on your taste in sandwiches, The Meat House is a butcher shop. The have a a couple very simple meat cheese and lettuce sandwiches on a hoagie for $2.50 so a sandwich, chips and soda will cost you almost $4. I like the bologna with salami. It isn't Oscar Meyer bologna either. The sandwiches at Schatts or Mahogany aren't terrible but I think they are a little over priced.
I always stop at Mahogny Smoked Meets for the Hot and Spice Brisket beef jerky.

I used to hit Culvers when I first got to Bishop then to the butcher shop next door for two of their cheapo Bolognese!salami/american cheese 6" hostile, then head up e. Line st. Two years ago they were $1.25 each so I didntcomplain about the flavor. If they're currently $2.25 (just now called them) then I'll probable bring some shaved meat from Albertsons. I know at $1.25, the sandwiches would sell out...maybe he's phasing them out...they not great, just edible if you're in a hurry. Just my 2 cents...others may find them equal to French cuisine.

Is somebody going to take over Culvers or is he just closing it down. He has been there forever, I thought he was doing good. He covered hunting and fishing.
