It seems fish reports here on FNN are a little few and far between right now. No matter, let me try to set a positive example by writing a few. lol I've got 5 different fishing destinations on my radar for the next couple of months. But I will go for the ones that seem to have the greater chance for success. (Fishing is ok but catching is great!!!) Just like in the fairy tale Snow White, the vain person said, "Mirror Mirror on the wall who is the fairest one of all!!!" By reading the Press release, "Lake Wohlford is the fairest one of all!!!" 3,000 lbs of hard fighting Nebraska Tail Walkers are to be stocked on Wed Jan 4 2016. Since I've already been there a couple of times this season, that was going to be an easy choice.

For this adventure I've got 3 companions who want to go. 2 of the 3 people wanted to go because I've said some pretty nice things about the lake. (so I had a little pressure on me to produce) Glenn is my fishing partner, so more or less where ever I go I can always count him in. The only problem with Glenn is, he fishes so much and in such great places he's a little lackadaisical on these small adventures. For me I still have eye of the Tiger even on these little excursions. Since there is 4 of us going we going to need 2 boats to fish on. Of course I will assume pirate captain on 1 boat but Glenn will be running the other boat because the other 2 people have never been to the lake before. Do I trust Glenn to do a good job running the boat???? No!!!!!!!! So for this adventure I must become "ADMIRAL" etucker!!!! (by definition an Admiral controls 2 or more vessels at the same time) To do this I started the day before. I took Glenn to one of my favorite Tackle stores to make sure he had all the right stuff. (it didn't help he was pretty drunk when I picked him up) So talking over strategy the day before was a little tough. I did come up with a pretty in genius idea to do while we were fishing. (walkie talkies)

On to the fishing!!!!

In my 2 previous trips this year to lake Wohlford, I learned about an area by the East Buoys that seem to be holding fish all the time. It's a medium size area, so the only good way to fish it is to make drifts about 200 yards at a time. Just imagine a Box with boundary's on a map. Stay in the box and you're in a fishy area the whole time. Stray out of the box, you're in a desert with no fish in it!!!! I've got the hot bait color and smell all figured out. (anything Orange with Garlic and Sardine smell smeared all over it) Stay in the box and drift and you will be catching fish all day!!!

The plan is to start drifting in the box and call off your hookups on the Walkie Talkies confirming what you got bit on. It started off good for us with a hook up on my first cast. A beautiful 3.5 lbs Tail Walker that ate the Orange Gulp power bait dipped in Garlic and smeared with Sardine paste. In short order we had 3 more hook ups all on the Orange Gulp. (all beautiful fish 3-4 lbs Tail Walkers every one of them!!!) I'm on the Walkie Talkie asking Glenn why aren't you bit yet???? Their biting the Orange Gulp like there is no tomorrow!!!!! He answer's kinda sheepishly because I left the Orange Pulp power bait at home. I said, "you're screwing with me right???" Glenn say's "NOPE!!!!" At that moment in time I became Admiral Blye!!!! He wasn't just messing up his good time but other peoples too!!!! So I told him firmly to get his boat over to the area where we were fishing. Thank God his companion is a very good fishermen in his own rights. He banged 3 fish really quick and one was a really nice one!!! (a good 4-5 pounder) My partner started banging them pretty good by now too!!! The only one who didn't have a fish yet was Glenn!!! Nobody can stay down forever, since they were now fishing in the box even Glenn caught a couple of pretty good ones. We were closing in on our limits by now so I really wanted Glenn and company to get theirs too. We made a drift right in the main channel and BANG we were done!!!! We had at least a 35 pound double limit for the 2 of us. By then I rounded up Glenn and company and gave them my left over good bait and instructions exactly where the best concentration of fish were. I'd be shocked if they didn't get their limits!!!! We were back at the boat dock by noon heading home from another great adventure!!!

Thanks for reading my story.

PS. I talked to Glenn today to find out how they ended up at the end of their day. They were off the water at 1:30 pm with full limits of Trout!!! As I hinted in the fish report, "Failure was not an option!!!" lol

I talked to them too and they said it rained on the people all day on Thursday!!!! Today was a beautiful day!!! That's why I always check the weather report first before I even think about going fishing!!! lol

I thought our stocked trout in our state now were triploids, which means by definition they cannot bang?

It's a very good lake once you learn it. The quality of the fish their stocking and the price is incredible!!!! (wondering how they can do it???) $7 dollars for a permit and $35 for an all day motor boat rental. Not counting Senior special days and price. I heard a rumor I'm going to check out, that one of the Casino's is sponsoring the lake. (that's just a rumor) If that was the case that makes sense!!!!

They can bang all day and night, just can't have anything to show for it.

Stupid to spend money to stock fish in a lake or stream that cannot produce wild stock where there are no competing "native" species to destroy.

I sure wish we had a DFG spokesperson on the board that would tackle these types of questions.

Stupid unless they are making a profit. I don't believe Wohlford is stocked by the DFW, private stocks only so the intelligence of stocking would be profit based and not biological integrity or concerns about competition with "native" species. It is a reservoir without major inlets seems to me sterility would not matter. Also water temps. would dictate no real holdover potential for any spawned fish, mute point.

Lake Wohlford does get small stockings of Trout by the DFW. There is some thing about this lake that doesn't make sense. "IT'S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!!!" A pay lake is set up for profit. (that's understandable) But the numbers so far this season at Lake Wohlford are, "they giving away too much fish for too little money." A pay lake usually stocks 1-2 lbers plus a few trophy fish. Wohlford stocks 2-4 pound fish plus a few trophy's. Compare the costs of a typical pay lake for a family of 3 fishing in a boat. The pay lake will charge $28 dollars a person plus $50 for a motor boat. That adds up to $134 for a family of 3 to fish there plus boat. Lake Wohlford charges $7 per person to fish plus $35 for an all day motor boat. For a totally cost of $56 per family to catch fish twice the size of the pay lake fish. It's true they don't stock every week, but so far they only missed 1 week in stocking trout since their trout season started Dec 11. (just make sure you pick the weeks they stock) lol That doesn't even count once you caught your limit of trout, you can fish for the other species they have in there. (you do need a fishing license) But you do get DFW stockings too!!! lol That was meant to be a joke!!! Yes they do stock trout but those fish are a joke in comparison to the Tail Walkers.

Can't you say the same about Dixon and Poway lakes.

I did not know that they received any trout stockings but really doesn't matter about sterile or not, no chance for reproduction. I am all for doing away with the BS sterile fish idea, at least the way the DFW applies it to all stocking in Cali.. I think areas like Crowley lake where a very robust spawn takes place are going to be affected by it. The tributaries might suffer due to no "desire" to head up creek and eventually the natural reproduction will cease to exist. I miss seeing the fish flying up stream even at Silverwood, spawns going up Miller and the Mohave I just don't see happening anymore and this year would have had great conditions for a spawn.

I've never fished Poway so I can't comment on that lake. There is a few minor differences in Dixon and Wohlford. At Wohlford you do need a fishing license and at Dixon you don't. At Wohlford you can C&R but at Dixon you can't. At Dixon they charge $2 more for a 2nd rod permit. At Wohlford they don't. On the weekends at Dixon they do charge a parking fee at Wohlford they don't. As I stated earlier the DFW does make small trout stockings at Wohlford at Dixon they don't. In the end I'm not sure which lake will get more fish but it will be close. They are closely run similar but not quite exactly.

Lake Wohlford is maintained and operated by the City of Escondido - it is not privately owned and thus operating at a loss is within the City's budget. Dixon is the same and Poway is maintained by City of Poway. SD county does not have any lakes comparable to how Corona and Irvine were operated.
