To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motor boats to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
Permits and Boat Rentals are now being issued at the Ranger Station. At present, unfortunately, we are limited to cash transactions only. A vending machine is being installed that will offer more payment options. We apologize for any inconvenience during this transitional period. The park will be closed weekdays throughout fall re-opening for weekday fishing in December with the first trout plant.
In the fall the larger catfish begin to bite. Paul Eddo of Escondido caught and released an 18.90# Blue Catfish while fishing off the South Shore Rock Pile using cut mackerel. Look for more big whisker fish to follow in the coming weeks, perhaps even a new lake record. Lake Wohlford cats prefer cut mackerel or chicken liver. Stop by the ranger station for a dough-bait recipe that works wonders on catfish, as well as carp.
Crappie, while still present, are scarce. Crappie are caught most often in the early morning, under the cover of shadows, using live golden shiners or mini-jigs.
Largemouth bass can be found on, and around, structure. They are hitting frogs, crawdads, and dark colored plastics.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
