Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motor boats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
The third annual Wohlford Catfish Derby is tomorrow Saturday July 2nd. The second of July is a free fishing day in the state of California which means no license is needed. Daily use permits are still required. Derby Saturday is also the first Saturday in July which means $20 all day motorboats for active military. The Derby features prizes for the first, second, and third biggest catfish in the following categories (Youth, Active Military, and Adults) in addition there is a grand prize of a $500 Bass Pro Shop gift card for the largest Catfish of the day. The park will remain open until midnight for night-fishing. Due to rising water levels and an overabundance of Bull-rushes shore fishing is somewhat limited so stake out your spot or rent your boat early. It promises to be a great event for all ages so please come out and join us.
Catfish are being caught throughout the lake. The best action is found near the buoy lines. The best baits for catfish are cut mackerel or chicken liver. Stop by the ranger station for a dough-bait recipe that works wonders on catfish as well as carp.
Small to medium sized bass can be found around structure. They respond well to crawdads, shad raps, and dark colored plastics.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
