Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motor boats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
The third annual Wohlford Catfish Derby will be held on Saturday July 2nd. The second of July is a free fishing day in the state of California which means no license is required on that day. Derby Saturday is also the first Saturday in July which means $20 all day motorboats for active military. The Derby features prizes for the biggest fish in various age categories and the park stays open late for night-fishing. It promises to be a great family event so make your plans now to join us.
Catfish can be caught throughout the lake, but the best action is often found near the buoy lines. The east end is best when the canal is flowing and the west end when the compressor that pumps oxygen into the lake is running. The best baits for catfish are cut mackerel or chicken liver.
Bass can be found around structure and respond well to crawdads, shad-raps, and dark colored plastics.
Crappie are being reported in small numbers. Crappie linger under the cover of shade and bite best in the early morning. The crappie are most often caught using live golden shiners or mini-jigs.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
