To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motor boats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
Good sized bass are still being caught, but the bite has slowed a bit with the changing conditions. Lan C. of Escondido caught and released a 7.10# largemouth Saturday using a nightcrawler on Senior Shoreline. Bass can be found around structure and respond well to crawdads, shad-raps, and dark colored plastics.
The first catfish plant of the year resulted in a noticeable uptick in both the number and the quality of catfish coming out of the lake. The third annual Wohlford Catfish Derby will be held on Saturday July 2nd. The second of July also happens to be a free fishing day in the state of California so no license is required on that date. The Derby features prizes for the biggest fish and the park stays open late for night-fishing. It promises to be a great family event so mark your calendars. Catfish can be found throughout the lake and they prefer chicken liver or cut mackerel.
Crappie are being reported in small numbers. Crappie linger under the cover of shade and bite best in the early morning. The crappie are most often caught using live golden shiners or mini-jigs.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
