I have a 2002 4 stroke Susuki outboard. Are the rpm limits on outboards similar than that of car engines? Is it safe to run it higher than 5000 rpm?

Thanks for any responses.

I have a 115 hp Yamaha 4 stroke that maxes out at about 5500 rpm (maybe 6K)... anyhow, the dealer told me that the more I run it flat out, the better. I run it at full throttle all of the time with a top speed of about 38 mph. I have close to 100 hours on it now and no prob. Hope this helps.

I don't know that you are wrong... just passing on my experience. I would check with your dealer to see what he says about your particular engine.

I recently rented a houseboat on lake Mohave for a week and the guy that did the orientation told me to keep the RPMs below 4000 at all times. The boat had twin 150 or 200 four stroke Honda's and they were capable of going over 5500 RPMs (not that I tried 8) ).

I know, at least Hondas, should be run at 4500 to 5000 rpm for max. efficiency.
It all depends on the pitch of the prop also and the amount of weight in the boat.
