Tried to con some info out of the lake employees on my way out and back into the marina regarding the water coming into the lake. Got some reluctant and mixed responses. First person I asked if they plan to fill the lake to full pool or anywhere close to, and the response I got was "Water is coming in and is going to continue to come in, that's all I can really say for now." However the next person I asked on my way in said "They put back in the water they took out about a month ago, I'm not sure if they are going to continue to fill it up right now." So essentially this is a help to no one, but just thought I'd share the info I received, or lack thereof.

Reserved a boat for today with a buddy about a week ago and was checking the weather forecast all week and of course a front rolled in Wedsnesday evening. Was hoping we would be spared this morning from heavy wind and we lucked out, surprisingly it was beautiful out and the bass wanted to play. Game plan was to start on the west end and work our way east as we could see the rain clouds slowly rolling in from the SW. Mainly concentrated on the north side all morning.

Water level was up seemingly even higher than my first trip back in late February. Clarity was very poor, unsure of the water temp as we didn't have a gauge. Hammered em pretty good at the west dam with weightless plastics for a good part of the morning, fishing mainly in the 10-15ft depth range. Didn't see very many at all up shallow, every bass was caught sight unseen. They were holding very tight in the rocks if you didn't tick the rocks you didn't get bit. Along the way managed to break off a tank that I couldn't turn and ran me in the rocks. Ton of micro fry hiding out in the rocks along the bank.

Worked east hitting channels and main lake points 15-30ft for a little slower pick with the usual suspects c-rig brush hogs, t-rig robos, neko senkos, small swimbaits, and fb jigs. Majority of the bass were post spawn bass but did catch some full of eggs as well. Wind increased as the day went on and really started gusting around 2 and was making it tough to get proper boat positioning so we called it a day. All in all was a good day considering it could have been a lot worse given the conditions.

Btw, can we bring back some normalcy to this forum?

Mudbone..Im not sure what is more impressive, the photos or the report.....bravo my man!!!!!! What type of rental do you prefer? The boats with the depth finder and trolling motor or do you go just with the red fishing boats?

Now back to the report. This morning saw what looked like a parade of cars..trucks.....motorcycles...bicycles...unicycle s....wheel chairs...and one guy walking on stilts all going down Domenigoni Expressway heading towards DVL. All moving really fast. I watched the group enter the lake and they all sprinted for rental boats with 6-8 guys per boat. A few even tried swimming for the west dam. I asked them where they were going. They replied almost simultaneously as they sped off, "West dam, 10-15 feet in the rocks, c-rig, brush hogs, t-rig, robos, neko, senkos, small swimbaits, and fb jigs".....................ughhh

Well hopefully the article I read in the paper is correct. They said they were going to fill it. It could take a couple of months.

F.Y.I....I was the guy swimming...Got clipped several times by either the ignorant or mean people out to get me but I finally made it to my secret spot near the west dam! Stuck 52 nice healthy BASS biggest being a 18.4 lber! The real problem was swimming back to the marina with a 36.5 lb stringer of LMB that were soon to become some tasty fish stix. :Big Grin:

Thanks fellas! It's no secret the fishing is very solid right now with bass in multiple phases of the spawn, can't wait to get back out.

Hahaha a guy on stilts you say? Definitely must be a sight fisherman! Ahh man they better not be at the west dam and they better not use any of those baits they're MINE  All jokes aside all 3 dams hold a great volume of baitfish/crawfish year round and the bass certainly know this more than I do.

As for rentals it mostly comes down to funds and boat availability. If I had a preference it would be the deluxe bass boat with trolling motor and fish finder. Although I don't trust their ff for locating fish instead I use it to read depth, bottom contour, high spots and drop offs, and water temp. I fish solo a lot and I end up getting the basic bass boat more often though, so I'll do a lot of drift fishing in the morning before the wind picks up then I'll just anchor on certain spots in accordance to the wind direction and/or current. I actually prefer anchoring on some spots that I'm confident are holding that way I can present multiple baits across a particular target area without making a bunch of noise with the trolling motor. It's surprising sometimes how many casts it can take with different baits at one specific target before you get one to commit. I prefer the bass boats over the red fishing boats because they offer a much more stable platform to fish from and allows me to stand up and fish comfortably anywhere in the boat. The red boats however are definitely the fastest in the fleet.

Thanks for responding Mudbone. I got a deluxe a couple weeks ago and one of the red fishing boats. Both were fine, but that little red fishing boat is fairly fast for only a 20 horsepower. Thanks for the tips on the dams and the rockie areas. For some reason ive been skipping those spots in favor of points, channels, islands, etc. Ive been getting fish, but not the quality you got..wow.

Rod, chuck a 4 or 5 inch Senko towards the shore. You can too become a dream fisherman.

Just make sure you pick up those bites.

That is how I fish when I don't get a trolling motor. Drift fish until the wind. I use the meter the same way too. No good for seeing fish, but good for everything else. Regarding the red Lunds, I feel they are plenty stable, but the biggest thing is they are 2 to 3 times faster than all the John boats. Fish alone mostly too.

You know the "In Fisherman" fishing show. Canadian with the Linders. They have the exact same Lunds for smaller bodies of water, with smaller to them being 3 DVLs. It is all fixed up with like a 50 or 90 horse motor. Decks fore and aft. Power pole, troller, two meters etc..setup very nicely.

Regarding the dams, I find them hit or miss. Zero or hero. No middle ground. You usually know in 10 minutes.
Great post spawn as they get packed with fry.

I cut my teeth fishing back east out of red Lund boats. Almost everyone back there has one. Kind of their version of a Bass Tracker. However, most of the ones I fished out of had 8 horse motors so imagine the smile on my face when I rented one from DVL with a 20 horsepower motor. I thought I was going for the gold in the all valley power boat championships with all that power at my disposal. Those smaller motors are better for trolling and while walleye fishing in Minnesota and the Dakotas we spent most of our time back trolling (yep, trolling backwards) to really slow it down. A common practice in the upper Midwest states and a practice that might get you admitted to the nearest mental hospital or nut house if you were seen doing it in so cal.

Nuthouse in California??? C'mon Rod, you're giving us waaaaay too much credit.
If you have a half day to fish and want to fish anywhere away from the marina, I would not recommend the basic or deluxe bass boat or 2-3 hours of your half day will be the ride. Slow does not begin to describe the painful ride to fish good water.

Your right on their, Brent. I rented the premium boat once thinking I was a big shot with all top of the line everything. I was kicking my self by the end of the day for not bringing a trolling rod because it was so slow I could have easily trolled some leadcore from spot to spot. Hell, one time I had the hammer dropped and a family of ducks came wattling buy and left me in their wake.........WTH. I couldn't believe it

You know you miss the ole KCAL 96.7 boat, Husker.

Whoever put a sticker on that outboard deserves a lifetime achievement award.
