Any fishing reports from Blyth? Fished Arazona twice this month on the Colorado river, not very productive, thinking of saving hours of driving and just going to Blyth and fish the Colorado river from there, anyone have any current reports?

Wait to late April or mid May. You need HOT!!! Weather to get them catfish feeding steady. You can also try Walters Camp in Palo Verde. Good launch ramp and plenty of camp-sites.

Where are You coming down from? There are a lot of good places to fish the River. The crazies and there water toys take over the River in Blyth area most weekends from the Memorial Day Holiday thru Labor Day. Further on down south are many places to fish and you don't even need a boat. Some really nice lakes to fish in the Yuma area and it sounds far away but the drive goes fast. Senator Wash has a great launch ramp and many campsites. You can fish all night down there just make sure you have a river stamp. Just a few miles north up river from Senators Wash Lake is Martinez Lake a truly great multi- species fishing area. Fisherman and all outdoor sportsman are well liked and catered too all through this area unlike the ZOO our area up here has become where you have to pay for each fish you catch at most places up here. Picture fishing and ramp fees and all like it was up here forty or so years ago.

I thought that AZ and CA did away with the need for a river stamp

So long as you fish the river or its tributaries, no River Stamp is needed, just your California fishing license.

no such thing as a river stamp anymore, back in the day you would have to have a river stamp if fishing from a boat

mite stay at the Mayflower county park off of 2nd ave in Blythe take Intake/95 north 5mi to 2nd ,2 miles east on 2nd to find the Mayflower county camp,,, spent years fish n the river from Hidden beaches camp a neighboring camp, ,,, early in the year the big ones er up river nearer the dam 6 miles up river,,,, fish near shore, find drop offs in slow moving water or reverse eddies,, fish near their dinner table,,, going to need to find gills on the river which will be your biggest challenge,,, need to be aware that the water level changes 2 to 4 feet a day up there,,, don't beach a boat and walk away from it could be high and dry or gone when you get back low water will be late afternoon till the water comes back up near midnight,,,have a good anchor with a spare,,,,,the one thing I can suggest is learn the river then learn how to fish the river,,,,for some fun get some stink bait for the channels and the furry thing bait holders from magic bait my favorite is hogwild super sticky blood

If you would like to go sometime pm me. I can't promise that you will catch a Flathead Catfish.....but you will catch bluegills & channel Cats. I got a new boat last year and it's ready to go back to the river. Last year my biggest Flathead was 25 lbs

Well, I've been out of the game for a minute, but I'm gearing up to get back in now, had some issues to address, now I'm looking to hear some screaming drags.
Anyone planning on hitting Blythe anytime soon, or at least know what the conditions are like?

Well, as the wife is sick, I am staying home this weekend, I got this wild hair up my... and decided to smoke 10 hams and take them into work for my team that is stuck working, a little something to remind them that even though I am now a part of the management, I have not forgotten from where I came...
Next weekend will be a different story, with Cezar Chavez day being a state holiday, I am off, I also requested a vacation day for Friday, so that will make for a nice 4 day weekend for me, now for the decision - Blythe, or Willow beach? I suppose that I could even venture out to Cattail Cove. I want to get out on the boat, but I also want to enjoy a nice camp fire and enjoy the camping thing... Any suggestions?

The stringer looks like Crappie. And the marsh might be TOPOCK MARSH out of Needles on the Arizona side of the river.

Try Oxbow Lake south of Blythe in Palo Verde. Camp, fish and launch right next to each other. You also have access to the river right next door. Bass, cats and bluegill. Seen some monster cats taken there. Friends have seen stripers sitting in the inlet current.

Talked to some friends of mine who went down to Blythe this past weekend and they got skunked on Flatheads but did catch a few channel cats and bluegills.....I made my traditional trip to Las Vegas to hook-up with my high school buddies (class of 77) for march madness......had a blast !! I still plan on going to Blythe at the end of April or early May.....I have learned from years past those Flatheads are hard to catch when the water is still cold, need the water to warm up a bit !

Thanks everyone, I am going to hit Blythe this week, not sure whether I should take the new boat, or the old 17 footer. The wind will determine which one is the better fit, I want to take the old 17 footer, but if the wind is up, the 18'7" rides much better, the 17'er is better in shallow water too. Any idea how the wind forecast is to be for Thursday? Where is Palo Verde? How do I find it? I was planning on starting the trip out by stopping by M&M bait & Tackle in Blythe, buy some goldfish and give the fishing a try. I was also wanting to get some firewood for the campground, my regular firewood seller went out of business, so it looks like I will be looking close to the camp site for such. I am really getting excited to check out the Blythe part of the Colorado. I heard that the canals are too shallow for a boat, and that shore fishing is dangerous due to rattlesnakes and bandits. I was advised to carry a firearm, but I am concerned about the legality of carrying a loaded hand gun on my boat. Anyone know how the laws work for that?

Dsrt Tortise
03-28-2016, 07:52 PM
Just don't flash it and you'll be okay. First time down their don't take the boat. You should concentrate on the canals as the water is warmer for the fish. As I'm typing this the wind is blowing over 50 mph in Indio. Never try and make it down I 10 in this kind of weather.

It's right off the 78 south of the 10. Palo Verde is a small town. It's on a map. Oxbow lake is a large backwater tributary to the river. I believe it's also call Palo Verde lagoon. Google is your friend.

In California you can conceal carry a weapon while fishing. In Arizona you can open carry a weapon no permit required.

DF are you sure that I can carry and conceal while fishing on the River? I don't need any trouble with the law... I looked at the upcoming forecast for Blythe, said 12 MPH winds on Thursday and down to 7 - 9 for Friday Saturday, and even less on Sunday with a high Sunday of 95 degrees!

I trust your knowledge of the law. But why don't you explain in plainer English what conceal and open carry means for the layman fishermen.

DEVOREFLYER

There is a California Penal Code law that allows anglers to carry a gun while fishing and while hiking to and from their angling site. California Penal Code, Section 12025, prohibits carrying concealed firearms in California, but Section 12027 provides the following exemption to this prohibition: "Licensed hunters or fishermen carrying pistols, revolvers or other firearms capable of being concealed upon the person while engaged in hunting or fishing, or transporting those firearms unloaded when going to or returning from the hunting or fishing expedition." Remember that some areas that allow fishing, such as state and national parks, and some incorporated areas where fishing is allowed prohibit the possession of any firearm.

DEVOREFLYER

etucker concealed means that the weapon is concealed/hidden from view (hidden under clothing, in a fanny pack or bag) and legal only with a permit (CCW). Open carry is the weapon is open or in plain view as being carried in a holster on a belt outside your clothing and visible to the public. The wizards in Sacramento have outlawed open carry in California (open carry scares the libs). In Arizona it is legal to open carry in the state and has been so for many many years. I always conceal carry when fishing unless it is posted as prohibited (some state and national parks).

General overview of California Law.

The Big Three laws regarding possession of firearms in California are as follows:

1) You may not carry a concealed (or "concealable") firearm in any public place or in the passenger area of your car (PC 25400). Handguns must be locked and out of reach during transport.
2) You may not carry a loaded firearm within any incorporated city (PC 25850), and
3) You may not "open carry" any sort of firearm (handgun, rifle or shotgun) outside of your vehicle within any incorporated city (PC 26350 & PC 26400). Since 2013, California is no longer an "open carry" state. You may still, however, carry an unloaded rifle or shotgun in your vehicle, e.g. in a gun rack.

Of course, these rules make allowances for police officers, military personnel, and licensed security guards to carry firearms as necessary. There are also some common-sense exceptions to allow for things like shooting competitions, hunting, target ranges, gun buy-back programs, licensed "concealed carry", etc.

Some of the exceptions are less intuitive, but still make sense. For example, these rules do not apply inside your own residence, place of business or other property that you own or lawfully possess. You may also transport an unloaded gun between any of those places. "Residence" includes any temporary residence, such as a campsite or hotel room (you may possess loaded and concealed weapons while camping). You may even carry a loaded / concealed gun at your office if you own the place or you have your boss's permission to do so.

PC 25400 does not apply while a person is fishing, but PC 25850 does. Essentially, this means that you may carry a concealed weapon while fishing, but the gun may not be loaded within city limits. If you are fishing outside of city limits, you may carry a loaded, concealed handgun.

Why, thank you DF, you are simply awesome! So for the record - while fishing on the River near Blythe, I am allowed to have a hand gun in my pocket or in my boat while on the river, and I can also carry said Firearm while I am in my camp site? As I drive a truck and therefore do not have a trunk, can I carry the Magazine in the glove box with the ammo in the Mag, while the hand gun is locked in a locked compartment on the boat, which I am towing to and from the river?

You are good to go. Or you can have the gun with the magazine loaded but not inserted in the gun and both carried in a locked case/briefcase/pack.

Bought a lock box from Turners for $144, so I'm good to go, it doesn't fit too well under the seat, but I will have to make it work any ways. Heading out in the morning, I had spoken to the lady at B&B tackle and she asked her brother "JJ" to give me a call, which he did today, he said that he would be glad to show me around tomorrow so that I don't have to spend all day driving around tomorrow. Hoping to hook up on some fish, either tomorrow or else some time on Friday.

Well, as life would have it, I did not get to get out this morning, now my new plan is to leave in the morning again. Planning on getting out at 04:00, should get there about 09:00, at least that is what I'm hoping for... went over the boat one last time today, checking out the running lights air pressure in the tires and grease in the wheel barring's. All systems are go, now it is just a matter of packing up and driving out!
