Find a sandy beach in Carslbad, the state campgrounds south to the Batiquitos Lagoon outlet should be fine. I mostly toss a 3/8 or 1/2 oz Kastmaster (silver/blue) or use my 8wt flyrod. A lot of people do a Carolina rig with about 18" leader, a #6 hook and Gulp! camo sandworms in the 2" size (or you can cut up the bigger models). Perch should be fine with the camo sandworms. Look for sandcrab beds if you can, might have a chance of the occasional corbina up close to the beach or maybe even the elusive spotfin croaker. I find Kastmasters work quite well, and allow you to cover a lot of area. I use 8lb. Trilene XL, a Sedona 2500, and a 7' medium action spinning rod (BassPro).

Anywhere from Tamarack Street offramp south to La Costa Avenue, and even the Hedionda Lagoon (look for the big smokestack at the new desalination plant. Lots of folks fish the lagoon for halibut, SFC, and other species.

Good luck.

what John Harper said... and if you do find evidence that the barred perch is not extinct from So Cal waters, it will come as something of a shock to many of us.

Take bread, bare hook and snag live bait.
