Greetings my fellow anglers,
I get a text from my boy Commander Wingnut aka Arthur asking me to go fishing with Peter (PTN) and Jeff (Webmaster) on the Kolomona on Sunday September 6, 2015.
“Hell yea!” I said (after checking with my girlfriend first).
The game plan was to meet and launch at 2:00AM out of Davies Launch Ramp in Long Beach and we would be fishing the San Clemente Islands. After loading the boat, we make our way to the bait barge only to discover that they only had pinhead-sized anchovies. We decided to go with half a scoop. Knowing that the baby anchovies weren’t going to suffice, we went and made bait for about an hour, yielding about 30 or so macks.
Soon enough, we were on our 3-hour plus trek to the San Clemente Islands. Peter and I catch up on our sleep while Arthur and Jeff man the wheel.
I woke up to lots of commotions and see Arthur and Peter on full bendos with Arthur landing what looks like a 25-30lb yellowtail. I get up and join in on the slay fest.
We basically trolled for the most part and caught them on the Rapala lures.
“The birds are money.” Jeff stated. And every time we drove through a group of birds, sure enough, the reels are burning and we’re screaming, “fish on!” We had so many double hook ups on the troll and Arthur was killing them throwing yoyo irons and surface irons.
We caught a good amount of yellowtails on live macks as well, usually after we’d hook up from trolling. It was cool seeing 2 or three Yellowtails following the hooked fish as we were reeling it in. Arthur would throw out a jig and nail a follower instantly. :Surprised:
Over all, we caught our limits of yellowtail, a few Bonitos, and some Calico Bass. A bonus to our successful fishing trip was the beautiful sight of a Humpback Whale jumping and doing spirals out of the water near our boat. The conditions and weather were beautiful and we even got pretty close to a Hammer Head shark that was inspecting our baits.
We were hoping to catch some Bluefin Tuna, but I ended up hooking and losing a big one sometime during the day.
Thanks again to Jeff and Arthur for taking us out and showing us how it's done. Peter, great meeting and fishing with you bro. :Big Grin:

Here are some pics of the trip. I'll add more tomorrow and I think Jeff will add a video.

Jeff is da man, he saved this big Yellow from being lost in the kelp. Spent about 15 minutes working with this toad and finally got it out of the thick kelp and onto the gaff.
