Seeing our friend
Last night (Friday) my Dad (anchor3n1) took my sister (haleebit) and I to Bill Varney’s annual surf fishing seminar at Carpenteria State Beach. We really enjoy seeing Mr. Varney because he wrote a book on surf fishing that we read a few years ago that helped us get started. Then we met him a couple of years ago at HG5 and told him about our experience. He's been a friend to us ever since. So we enjoy seeing him when he comes up our way to hold his seminars on the beach.

It’s been a while
I have to think hard about when was the last time I’ve been on the beach with my dad and sister with a fishing rod in my hands. I’m in high school now and very busy:Sad: Also I spend a lot of time pursuing ballet. In fact, I just got home this week from Seattle where I have been attending a ballet company’s summer school since mid July. A California girl like me has been missing our beautiful beaches and of course fishing!
The long day
So for someone who hasn’t been on a beach in a while, yesterday was like overeating ice cream and getting a tummy ache:EyePop: Let me tell you what I mean. The day’s original plan was to stay around the house doing stuff and then go with dad and Alexa up to Carpentaria in the late afternoon. However, we found out that there was a class beach day for my school yesterday too. Yup, me and sis went. It was at Hueneme beach. We left in the morning, got back home in the afternoon, then left for Carp about 30 minutes later. Wow I think I was on the beach for close to 10 hours. That’s a lot of beach time for me:Shocked:
The good stuff
Alexa and I are moving from bait fishing to lures. Daddy is teaching us how to use different lures and move a lot to find the fish. But my sis and I still love bait fishing for BSP. And that was what it was yesterday. As soon as we arrived at the beach we said our hellos to Mr. Varney, his friend Mr. Ken and met his other fishing buddy Mr. Mark. Then Mr. Varney held a 15 minute seminar on surf fishing. We learned about some different baits and how to fish them. Then we headed down to the water to start fishing.
The choice of baits was lugworms, preserved ghost shrimp and sand crabs. We decided to use the sand crabs first. For a while we weren’t catching anything and not getting hits either (At least we didn’t think so). But Dad checked our crabs and told us we were getting bit and to set the hook as soon as we felt any hit. That did the trick because soon I landed a decent one and then another:Razz: Alexa started to land them soon afterwards too.

Happy me:Smile:
Around 8pm we started to get cold and done with the beach so we called it and left the fish still biting.
See ya later
It was a great daddy-daughter date for all of us. We got to hang out on the beach together and catch fish (well at least me and Alexa fished, dad made sure we had fresh bait, coached us, and unhooked the fish we landed) and then we ate food from Del Taco. All in all, we had a wonderful time. We are looking forward to getting to see a whole bunch of you in about 7 weeks at H7. It’s going to be awesome.

Like my dear old dad says, “ bent rods and “less talkin’ and more fishin’ makes for more fun” (but Dad loves to talk so I don’t know what he means:EyePop:).
Take care,
Noelle
