Hello Anglers,

I am a 17 year old dude from West Covina. Didn't know where to post this, so I guess this is a good place, haha.

Is it wrong to keep fishing locations secret? Because I have come across some good areas to fish in that aren't well known, but I'd rather keep them secret. I guess I am afraid that people will go to them and pressure the fish and have a negative impact on the environment by depleting the population of fish.

So, if you came across an unknown fishing hole, would you keep it a secret? Or would you give out the location here on FNN?

Keep it secret. I showed my good fishing buddy a spot. He said he'd keep quiet. Started with cousin, it's not secret anymore !

WCAngler,

Loose lips sink ships.

Now, if we were in Montana where fishing destinations flood the entire state, then sure, telling a few people about your spot wouldn't be a big deal, considering that those same people probably have better honey holes and won't invade yours.

Realize that we're in Southern California, estimated population? Too many. We also have 5 lakes to fish.

Simple math should make you realize that the honey holes you find should be kept to yourself. If you want to post a few pictures on the Photos/Videos section of the site, then by all means. But don't be like some of the dudes here who wake up each morning excited to see PMs in their Inbox of members asking them for their location of their secret spot after reading their reports; don't know how they expect it to remain secret if they're posting it on a board where millions of people have access to.

If you find one, keep it secret. Share your catches on the Pictures/Videos section, but make sure not to tell anybody, unless you want your secret spot run over by individuals who don't make the effort to find the spots, and would rather PM people instead of doing their own research.

It's unfortunate but DS is right. Many of us a little older dudes grew up learning that it was good to share fishing with friends and family, that teaching and sharing fishing information was a good thing. Although the teaching aspect I think is still important and I will always do my best to share that with others the sharing of "spots" is something I will only do with a selected few. Bummer and not really what I want but So Cal has just too many rats in the cage.

I learned the hard way on this one. Thought I had a good friend, turned out to be a real idiot. I showed him a really good spot and told him to keep it on the down low. Well sure enough he slowing started taking other people. Of course they told someone and the domino effect took over. Now the place totally sucks. Keep places to yourself man ........

Like others said, keep it a secret unless you want that place to be known.

I've had the same happened to me in the past about secret locations. Thought it would be kept a secret but sure enough, next time I was out there, it was the person I shared the spot and his friends. Few more sessions out there and ran into his friends with his friends smh.

I basically fish with my bro's and fish buddies from years and years ago that I know that they won't share the spot with others.

This is funny....You'd think it would be common knowledge that if you post here or anywhere on the internet...your spot is one google search away from being invaded.

...your spot is one google search away from being invaded.

Unless your audience has no idea where to start.

Which is why I mention that a simple photo with no discerning background posted in the Photos/Videos section is mighty appropriate for this type of scenario. (Just don't be an idjit and leave the GPS coordinates on your photo, since that's how I got half of people's 'secret spots' back in the day.)

Ok I've had enough of this!!!! Make your case?????? I'll start with mine, there is a part of your brain that controls paranoia and anxiety. Apparently some people are born with a larger section of this part of the brain. There is a direct link of this part of your brain and Conservatism, since most people on this board are Conservatives that means probably most of you are paranoid. (that's a scientific fact) Now let's use some logic, with the exception of a native trout stream that is never stocked and if you kill the fish they are gone forever. What lake and or secret spot has been ruined by telling other people about it. It can't be some illegal lake or Golf course but a known lake or Regional park. Also explain how a local fishing the lake wouldn't have found this spot just by observation of seeing this spot produce or read about it in Western Outdoor News. Be specific, you can change the name of the lake if you like, but you will be cross examed so be prepared to defend your answer!!! Good Luck!!!

Conservatives aren't paranoid because the libs really are out to get us. And our fishing spots. Marley's Secret Spot 1.1 comes to mind ;)
So keep the special spots to and for yourself for those days when you just want to be alone and if you take pictures, turn off the GPS on your phone/camera and blur the background.

WTH? Define conservative? As many differences between them as between liberals. Is there a larger section of liberals brains that make them more simple-minded? This conservative thinks universal health care is a good idea (single payer), likes guns and weed and doesn't like religion. I wouldn't tell anyone **** regarding bass spots. Illegal meat fisherman have smart kids that know how to do internet searches. Best to keep quiet about it. Saw some undocumented keeping fish 3 inches long at mile square park last weekend. Guessing they were saving them for bait. People do internet searches way more than the read Western Outdoor News. I haven't lived here and fished here a long enough time "be specific". I'm sure the moderator or site owner can tell you the view count of threads on here though.

Sssshhhh. Don't say a word or post a pic, unless the sky is in the background. When I was a kid I wouldn't even tell my dad where I cought the nice browns when we went up to Bishop. I simply said, "up stream". My uncle would lough his ars off.

If you tell someone the area & supply a pic THEY WILL FIND IT. That said I spend a lot of time searching google earth since I no longer drive. The next time you go fishing look around, up, and down to see what makes this spot "SECRET?"
Im a fan of a good report and photos and several GREAT FISHERMEN on here know how to keep it "their secret" with pics. Popular spots in SOCAL ??? ALL OF THEM. If you find a spot that you feel is that special chances are that you're fishing in someone "SECRET SPOT."
Fishermen are natural predators so yeah we are a lil sketchy on small creeks & streams that are hot. Also are very protective of the a$$hats that come in and leave their trash behind and just poach what they can from our treasured spot.
Its really personal prospective and if you want to pack out "OTHERS" trash rather than fish from said "SECRET SPOT."
GOOD LUCK.

Sir,

I am prince Isa Ahmed the younger brother to mrs, Mariam Abacha. She got your contact while going through her late husband's library and hope that you can give us adequate assistance.

My aim of contacting you is to seek your assistance in transferring the knowledge of 100 secret fishing spots in south california and into your trusted ninja database. These spots were part of her late husband's private knowlege. Immediately after his sudden death last year and she quickly informed me, since I virtually run most of her secret business both here in lake perris and overseas, as she has a lot of confidence in me and fortunately with my immediate assistance, and contact we were able to deposit the spots in a security vault pending when the whole situation will be calm. To show i can trust you please do let me know of one of your secret spots this way we know there is trust between us. I eagerly await your reply. God bless prince ahmed
