Hi all,

Had a great trip up through the Sierras the last week, tho sightseeing was the main objective over fishing. My ever patient wife did enjoy some time reading tho

Started with a quick stop on the way to Lake Tahoe at the Upper Owens, a favorite from previous trip. Was stoked to get this 20 inch rainbow 3rd cast, a great start. Released after a few photos for someone else to catch another day.

Managed another smaller fish for the campfire around 12" before continuing North.

Didn’t get much fishing in around Lake Tahoe, was more of a sightseeing trip. Then headed off to Trumbell Lake, which was full of rainbows rising to tiny insects. Woke up early the next day and managed one around 13" on a spoon.

Briefly stopped at Virginia Lakes the next day, but it was pretty busy on a Saturday and didn’t see anyone catch anything. Next bit of fishing was the 20 lake basin around Saddlebag lake. I had a goal to catch a brook trout, which are not existent in the heat of my homeland. Was stoked to get one first cast, released.

Then had a few casts in most of the 20 lakes, but couldn’t land a fish! Heaps of 3” brookies hitting lures, but couldn’t stay connected, even with the tiniest hardbodies & soft plastics. Next time I’ll have the fly rod, loaded up with the tiny flies they were continually hitting off the surface. I was amazed by the numbers of tiny fish, but I guess the elevation and competition makes putting on weight difficult. Managed another one before leaving. Beautiful eating cooked over charcoal, best trout i think I’ve had.

Spotted what looked like golden in the creek at Tamarack Flat in Yosemite, but the weather wrecked my chance of catching one. Did have a ball doing the Cloud's Rest hike tho.

Loved our time in the area, a great place to visit. Have another trip lined up in September.

Cheers,
Scottie

Great report Scottie! 3 more weeks and I'll get to be up there too! Saddlebag lake and the loop lakes are one of my favorite places to go when I'm up there. Brookies are abundant when you start hiking up...check the stream...lots and lots of 5-8 inchers. A note on this...I've learned that they won't bite if they sense that you're there. We literally have to get on our hands and knees and crawl up to get them. The only thing that I let visible was the tip of my fishing rod. lol
