I'm going to be near UCSD for 4 days next week for a conference. I'm basically a freshwater guy but I have a 7'6 Cabela's salt shaker rod rated at 6-15lbs & a Shimano Stradic FJ3000 that I haven't used yet. Don't know what the salt would do to the combo. I I also have some 3-4 year old unopened Berkley 2in power grubs (black, motor oil, & pumpkin seed). Wondered if I could use this setup? Would appreciate feedback..Thanks

BTW, wasn't there a surf 101 sticky here? I'll look for it..

Not sure about the rod without seeing one or feeling the action. The reel is about the best that Shimano makes for the surf...just make sure you rinse it off. Don't use a high pressure hose. The best way I've found is to dunk the reel upside down and reel. Bring it out of the water and keep reeling upside down. Wipe it down and let it dry...again upside down. If you do this right side up, you'll drive the salt and sand into the bearing.

As far as the grubs, motor oil is always a good place to start with a carolina rig.

Good luck!
Don

Hit up Ocean beach tonight for the grunion run.

You can also fish that beach for some halibut...they love to eat grunion.
