Backyard burger and wiener roasts targeted by EPA
By Paul Bedard | March 13, 2015 | 11:44 am
The Environmental Protection Agency has its eyes on pollution from backyard barbecues.

The agency announced that it is funding a University of California project to limit emissions resulting in grease drippings with a special tray to catch them and a "catalytic" filtration system.
The $15,000 project has the "potential for global application," said the school.
The school said that the technology they will study with the EPA grant is intended to reduce air pollution and cut the health hazards to BBQ "pit masters" from propane-fueled cookers.
Charged with keeping America's air, water and soil clean, the EPA has been increasingly looking at homeowners, especially their use of pollution emitting tools like lawn mowers.
The school is proposing two fixes to reduce emissions from barbecues. First, they want to cut back on grease flare-ups. The idea: "A slotted and corrugated tray is inserted immediately prior to meat flipping, and removed immediately after. This short contact time prevents the tray from over-heating and volatilizing the collected grease. This collected grease will then drip off into a collection tray and can be used at the pit master's discretion."
But, total capture isn't "practical," so a filter and fan are proposed for installation. "The secondary air filtration system is composed of a single pipe duct system which contains a specialized metal filter, a metal fan blade, a drive shaft, and an accompanying power system with either a motorized or manual method. This system can be powered by either an exterior electric motor with a chain-driven drive shaft, directly spinning the fan blade, or a hand-powered crank," said the project write-up.
The grant is part of the EPA's "National Student Design Competition for Sustainability Focusing on People, Prosperity and the Planet (2014)."
The expected results, according to the proposal:
"We expect to limit the overall air pollution PM [particulate matter] emissions from barbecuing and to alleviate some of the acute health hazards that a barbecue pit master can experience from inhalation. The particulate matter present during cooking with and without the grease diverter and PM2.5 filters will be tested and compared to that of current data using a conventional propane barbecue using a fumehood chamber with detectors at CE-CERT. Personal exposure of PM2.5 will also be monitored throughout the experimentation period to determine the degree of acute exposure of particulates to the cook."

Dev, aren't you a little too old to keep acting like a overreacting knee-jerk crybaby?

Oh wait - you're quoting a driveling, conservative hack from the Washington Examiner, so I guess you're not.

Never! The Troll poster above is proof of their intolerance of dissent from their demented lust for control over all aspects of our existence...It'll end when they are finally and soundly rejected and defeated...

Lol, after reading this I told wifey to go pick up a couple of pork shoulders. I'm going to get up at 4:00am and fire up the BBQ and slow cook and SMOKE those babies ALL DAY with sweet maple wood. I'll rub the Memphis BBQ seasonings into the meat and get it going on the grill then wifey and son will take over till I get back from work. The sweet aroma will have my neighbors drooling, and the idiot liberal behind me fuming, lol...

Got an SKS, 2 M1 Carbines, and a nice accurized 700BDL in .30-06. Not worried about zombies.

Oh please. This only goes to show how ready and willing you are to lap up even the most ridiculous conservative vomit.

I enjoy a good 'cue as much as anyone else. I've got both gas and charcoal grills, and have done my share of grilling and smoking. Ribs, chicken, fish, steaks, sausages, you name it.

One of our more recent concoctions, for your viewing pleasure:

http://s13.postimg.org/mcjovaf6v/k19.png

I call it K19, because it's a widowmaker. Patties, bacon, and egg were cooked on the grill.

Only the worst kind of alarmist flathead conservative nincompoop would "report" on this and interpret it as some attempt to "TAKE AWAY OUR GRILLS!!!" (add as many exclamation points as you feel is necessary), or even price them out of existence. This is a student project, nothing more, nothing less. And Mr. Bedard is merely playing on the baser intellect and emotions of conservatives who should (I would hope) know better.

Incidentally Dev, why the need to suddenly ring out the alarm for this non-issue? Especially considering your recent dismissive attitude when it came to the recent BATFE infringement upon our rights as gunowner? Was that particular call to action simply not low-bow enough for you?

City boy talk, blah blah blah. I grew up in Texas and never understood why my friends killed stuff for fun and never will.
The argument that they are prolific and cause property damage is stupid.
I'm pretty F'n sure the prairie dogs and gopher are saying the same thing about the murderous bastards that are on the property they have been on for millennia. Too bad they don't have the same type weapons to protect themselves. My guess is, nobody would jack with them then...lol Typical non caring non humanistic response. They're damaging our property therefor let's massacre them.
Hunting for subsistence is one thing. Massacring animals for fun is deranged.

Better reread the prior posts, I wasn't the one who said "city boy talk". As for damaging property I could care less where you grew up, facts are facts. They can severely damage property, berms, levies, dams etc. etc. And they also can carry plague, rabies and an assortment of other disease. If a property is overrun with them, then they must be exterminated. If it's my property, I'm gonna get as much target practice as I can and I'm going to KILL THEM ALL whether YOU like it or not...:Death2Above::Guns:

Now I'm going to go fire up the Q and drink my Frappuccino...

The Belding Ground Squirrel in California and Oregon is a pest causing millions of dollars in damage to farmers. There is open season and no limit on them as they are classified as varmints/pests.They are so prolific that several areas in California and Oregon have Chamber of Commerce sponsored Ground Squirrel hunts. I have been to the one in Surprise Valley California a number of years ago. Hunt is limited of 100 hunters and thousands of ground squirrels are eliminated from farmers fields and still there were many thousands left. It was not unusual to take 200 or more in a day of shooting. The winning team (2 hunters) had over 900 in an 8 hour hunt. The video is an example of the quantity of squirrels a hunter can expect. Picture a pickup truck bed overflowing with ground squirrels and that is what the winning team looked like.

Thank you for posting that video. Reminds me of the great times I had splatting ground squirrels on my buddies ranch. The springtime was the best, when the small ones came out....nice small moving targets at 600-800 yards perfect for a Remington 700 .223 with a Mark IV scope with mil dots.
