My pal Bob and I headed down to San Diego for three days of bay fishing...started in Chula Vista at the south end...we picked up a dozen ghost shrimp at a bait & tackle store for Bob to try and catch a bonefish...on the first day, I used a gulp smelt on a white leadhead and caught about 50 little spotties...here's one with the killer lurehttp://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g402/yobobscott/smelt.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/yobobscott/media/smelt.jpg.html)
Bob concentrated on the ghost shrimp, trying to get a bonefish...nothing was interested in them all morning, but he kept at it, and in the afternoon all kinds of fish got interested in ghost shrimp...a smoothhound shark

a diamond turbothttp://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g402/yobobscott/dia.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/yobobscott/media/dia.jpg.html)
and a small halibut and a few spotties as well, but sadly, no bonefish.

On the second day we launched out of Glorietta Bay, and we both used leadheads...I dug out one that worked thirty years ago, a gold sassy shiner...I don't think you can get them anymore...but they still workhttp://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g402/yobobscott/sass.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/yobobscott/media/sass.jpg.html)http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g402/yobobscott/hal.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/yobobscott/media/hal.jpg.html)http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g402/yobobscott/liz.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/yobobscott/media/liz.jpg.html)
We also both caught a bunch on the gulp smelt...here's the biggest spottie, probably a keeper...http://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g402/yobobscott/big.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/yobobscott/media/big.jpg.html)
On the third day we got a kayak scoop of sardines and fished the upper bay, trying to get a keeper halibut...it was really slow...caught a couple spotties, a sea lion, and this scorpionfishhttp://i1100.photobucket.com/albums/g402/yobobscott/sculp.jpg (http://s1100.photobucket.com/user/yobobscott/media/sculp.jpg.html)
but no halibut, not even a short...still a great trip...the spotties seem eager to cooperate any time I've gone there over the years...we'll be back, probably in a warmer month, to try for the bonefish again.

Nice report, nice pics & nice fish.
It's always nice when you can hit the water with a friend.
Thanks for sharing,
Robert

Thanks Robert...though the bay didn't gift us with quality (i.e. big) fish, it made that up with quantity and variety.

Heck of a mixed bag there. Too bad about the missing bonefish but looks like you found a pretty good amount of other action.

Thanks Don...it was good action...the spotties were nonstop for the first two days while the tide was moving.

Hope you get your bonefish.
