Fished 2 days back to back.
1.17.15

Arrived at Malibu around 6:45 and started fishing at 7. Switching back and forth between the kroc and the LC for nothing for at least 4 hours. On the way back to the car I manage two skunk busters a short butt and smelt. However, I ended up losing a LC to some rocks :? not a great way to end a session.

1.18.15

Once again, hit malibu but this time a different section of the beach. It was quite strange, upon arrival the waves were about 1-2 feet but as soon as we were ready to fish the waves became 2-4 feet. Water was murkey but at least the weeds were minimal. First skunk buster a short butt on the LC. After a really long cast next to a rock I get hammered and its got some nice weight behind it. I am thinking a legal hali or a really big YFC. What actually ends up on the sand surprised me.

A legal calico about 17 inches. First time I have ever caught a calico from the surf let alone a legal one. CPRed. Hopefully, I had some good karma on my way.... but I was wrong.

A few hours later I was switching baits and decided to lay my LC on the sand(thinking it was already tied to my line) then a wave came and the ocean claimed my LC. After throwing a few rocks around I cooled down but it was such a bummer to lose two LCs in two days.

The lesson I learned was that you can always buy another lure ( it still sucks) but catching a new species/PB in beautiful CA coast is truly priceless. Oh and somethings are not worth throwing tantrums for.

Cheers

Nice random Fish! were you throwing the flash minnow? I had back to back LC losses in November. Both flash minnows. Both into rocks. (I did catch my first flattie ever, on that day). Don't feel bad lol. I've since learned my lesson about structure and casting to it properly. This weekend fish will be on the chew!

Losing LC's never feel good. I had the distinct honor among my group of friends of losing the MOST LC's in 2014....LOL
Just paying the dues I suppose!
It looks like you really put yourself around some great structure though and at least it paid of with a few fish. That what you have to do some times!

Nice Flattie and Calico you got. Good job and congrats sir!

Hi fish4life:

Like everybody has said in so many words, "losing LCs is part of the game". We use LCs cuz we want to catch the bigger better fishies. It's a higher reward but also a higher risk strategy compared to other methods.

Oh well...great pictures and a great catch my friend.

Keep it up!!!

regards,

Nick

Has anyone ever used a lure retriever and does it do what it's supposed to?

Nice job on the PB checker and pancake. Sometimes Poseidon requires sacrificial offerings to give up his prizes...but I think he stills owes you.

Congrats!

Lure retrievers work great from a boat if you can get above the snagged lure. It's all about gravity taking the retriever down to your lure. In a surf fishing scenario it wouldn't be very effective though IMHO.
