just bought a house and was working on the garage tonight when I noticed something wedged between a stud and bracing.

I know a little bit about past owners of the place and so have an idea of what it is - but I'd be interested to hear input from the gallery.

Looks like 1800s era for a flintlock musket. Tons of web info out there....

poked around on the web a little bit and it looks most similar to an 1816 musket bayonet... but I can't find any images or descriptions that match the scabbard.

The home was once owned by a Hollywood costumer (now deceased) and I wonder if this may have come off of a set. This, coupled with it's good condition, led me to suspect this might be a later-day replica or prop - but then why go to the trouble of putting a "US" stamp on it that will never be seen? And it's hefty too... can't imagine getting run through with one of these things - ow

detective work continues

Excellent find. It appears to be in excellent condition and with a scabbard too just made the value go up. Don't try to clean it at all as it will decrease it's value. I am sure you be able to find it's vintage and value as you know Google is your friend. :Big Grin:
