IRVINE LAKE REPORT
By Steve Carson
1/11/15
IRVINE LAKE BROWN TROUT GOING OFF; 7-4 TOPS CATCHES
Anglers at Irvine Lake continued to make good catches of brown trout at Irvine Lake this week, reported Jimmy Getty at the Pro Shop. “I continue to be amazed at the number of brown trout that are coming in”, observed Getty. “Every day we see good numbers of browns up to 7 or 8 pounds, and many anglers make multiple catches of browns. Best bet to get one is trolling Rapalas or casting metal, but a surprising number of them are biting on PowerBait. The rainbows are also biting of course, but I have never seen the brown trout fishing remain this consistent at Irvine Lake.”
Getty added, “The storm left the water a little stained, so very short 6-8 inch bait leaders and PowerBait colors like white lightning and garlic chartreuse are what has been working. Bait fishing is a little better during the AM hours, but the troll bite has been steady all day long.”
As is usually the case during and after stormy periods, anglers who targeted catfish where water was flowing into the lake. A couple of nice stringers of 3 to 6-pound whiskerfish were caught by anglers flylining mackerel in several spots. Bass anglers found fair numbers of 2 to 4-pound largemouth on jigs and crawdad-colored crankbaits due to an abundance of crawdads.
Trout trollers scored with very brightly-hued lures. Top choices included firetiger-color Rapala Countdown CD05’s or Jointed J05’s, and fluorescent red ScatterRap SCRCD07’s. Very slow trolling was important as well, with 0.9 to 1.9 mph reported to be the best range of speeds, along with adding a constant “ripping” motion with the rod tip.
Families with children age 12 and younger did well in the Kids Lagoon on 1 to 3-pound trout using PowerBait. Surface temperature on the main lake is 49-52 degrees, with underwater visibility rated stained. The lake level has risen about 8 inches this week, and the Trout Island launch ramp should be in operation within a week or so, and the west shore ramp is in full operation. A special trout derby and Master’s Qualifier event will be held over the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend.
Outstanding catches at Irvine Lake this week included;
Ben Riech of Yorba Linda, 7-3 rainbow trout on a Rapala at the west shore
7-year old Camille Niven of Diamond Bar, 6-14 rainbow trout on a Flickershad at Jim’s Point
Tom Browning of Stanton, 6-8 rainbow trout on nightcrawlers at the west shore
Chance Snell of Orange, 7-4 brown trout on a Kastmaster at the west shore
Devon Higgins of Lake Forest, 4-7 brown trout on a PowerWorm at the west shore
Tony Grijalva of Placentia, 4-0 brown trout on Power Bait at the west shore
Mike Meredith of San Diego, 4-0 brown trout on a Flickershad at mid-lake
Don Spencer of Silverado, 4-1 largemouth bass [released] on a crankbait at Rocky Point
