Probably not a fish commonly caught by anglers, but I've run into this little fish on several snorkeling trips off Laguna and Corona del Mar area.

Basically, small yellow/white fish with black stripes.

Looks like some type of bream. Very similar to scolopsis bilineatus. Member of grunt/sweet lip family of fish.

They may be juvenile croakers. Maybe black croakers?

I think you're right on dude. I never knew yfcs were striped in their juvi stage.

Indeed those are Umbrina. But actually could be one of several species of umbrina that arent listed in the regulations.. likely U. roncador, though.

They have the same kind of fish out here in China Lake, they are called Sand Fish.

You're probably seeing juvenile white bass. yellowfin croakers and their relatives are oceanic, and while they can tolerate brackish water, like nearly all croakers, freshwater will kill them on contact. The only freshwater scianids in the USA are freshwater drums, which are restricted to the mid-east/ eastern states
