Headed down to San Diego yesterday for a 3/4 on the Malihini in search of the come and go YT bite. Numbers were up on Sat./Sun. and I wasn't sure the bite would hold out until Wed. We had a slow start, searching and searching around the Coronado's and I started thinking the YT had moved on. Capt. Mike isn't afraid to move and move and move until he finds the schools. We made our first stop a little before 10am, and I picked up my first yellow of the day on a sardine. It was a schoolie, but blood was now on the deck. More searching, and a stop around noon produced 2 rock fish an a larger Bonito.

The afternoon was when the fun began. Next stop, the Capt. gets on the PA and sounds excited about what he's seeing on the scanner. I dropped a yoyo over and BAM, 20lbs YT. I gabbed the bait rig on the next drop and pulled another 20+lbs YT, things are looking good. The boat swung around for another go and the next fish was 30+lbs! They just kept growing in size and strength. On the next hook up, I met my match. this fish kicked my butt, and rocked me after I failed to put the brakes on him. What a blast, I was pumped and I had room for one more in the bag. That fish came on the next stop and followed the growth pattern slightly larger then the last. Perfect way to finish the day.

We had 20 people fishing on deck with about a 50/50 split on experienced vs. newbie anglers. I'm still closer to newbie on party boats, but I know how to manage my line and shuffle on the rail. The Capt. and crew did a great job helping people move on the rail and untangling hooked fish and vacant lines. Saved a few from the sea dogs as well. I'm thankful for many things, and Advil is one of those things today lol.

Thanks, guys. It was a great trip, and only my second on an open boat. The first time out was similar with the number of hookups, but had slower/steadier action through the day. The only problem was, I was new to fishing the rail and lost 3 slugs to inexperience (very frustrating). This was my redemption trip and the tuff lessons learned paid of. This season is going to spoil me if I'm not carful.
