I made a run to Castaic before work today.

I was the only boat when I got there at opening time and one of 2 boats when I left at 8:30.

The bait situation was looking good as I rolled out of the no wake zone.

This is the first thing I saw on the fishfinder.

I waited around for the fish to come up on those but nothing happened, so I followed a group of excited seagulls down the lake. It soon became clear why they were excited. My only problem was choosing one of the three coves that they were feeding in, on the West side of the fish arm. I picked up a dink and lost one at the boat then started looking for bigger models using my ears.

I was rewarded with a fat one that must be 7 or 8 lb. I knew that it wasn't a DD. Really that was Sun grins.

After that one I washed around the coves with the seagulls casting to the deeper sounding boils but didn't get hit. When the seagulls drifted off, I toured the lake looking for more. I found a big boil against the cliffs in the Ski Arm but didn't get to it in time. There were fish popping in Nacktie Canyon too but none for me.

I talked to the guys in the other boat (Eric, I think.) they hadn't gotten on them yet.

When I rolled back to the Fish Arm, it was glassy smooth. Just as I decided it was too smooth, I found the seagulls again, this time on the other side. I snuck up on the boils keeping very quiet. I was the only boat anywhere around.

The gulls were feeding in a big area but the blowups were few and widely scattered. I picked up a little bigger dink casting to one pop then while I was throwing it in the cooler I heard the sound of some bigger fish 2 casts away against a cliff. I moved over there slowly. Really slowly! I just put the motor in gear without throttling up then shut the motor down and drifted listening for heavier swirls.

When I heard them, I cast. I hooked up in less than one crank of the reel handle. The fish hit so gently, I wasn't sure it was a big one but when it went straight for the middle of the lake, I knew that it would be a nice one.

I got a look at it as it went by, just before it took off and knew that it was long. After 3 long drag peeling runs and a few shorter bursts, the fish rolled over on it's side and let me lip it.

DD!

No scale so I measured it. It's 32" long with a 16" girth. Should be right at 10 lb. It's a skinny one.

Cooler shot!

I knew that it would be good when I realized that I had forgotten my nets and that I left my tackle box in the truck. All I had with me were the lures on my poles.

I could hear the bigger models in there when I cast. I knew this wasn't one of them. But I was happy, trying to get a picture and get back out.

This was a fishin one day Mike. :Big Grin:

Hell-of-a morner. And all the time I thought a "Morner" was like a "Nooner" only sooner.

Thanks Dev.

You're right it is.

Thank you.

It should be wide open. I don't know what they are biting on right now. I'd go with Fresh Sardines, Lug Worms and NightCrawlers. I'm sure that they will want something specific. If you give them what they want it should be good.

Ron,

To get one big fish before work is a great job--to get that second big bite on the same day is awesome.

Good Fishing, Sluggo

WTG Ron nice task to complete on anyone to do list

Thanks Lowe, I try not to make a to do list for fishing but there it is.

Thanks CSF, I was just chasing the big ones. I knew they were there because I could hear them. Every time I lost my focus and threw on the smaller ones the big ones would come up somewhere else.

WTG Ron. Congrats again.

Thanks koifish. when are you going?

WTG that's awesome. That's making working really hard.

That work interferes with a lot of stuff!

Thank you, there were a bunch of big ones around while I was bringing the big one in. I needed backup!
