Post HG6 Surf Session... S.W.A.T. Chasing the Bonies! Sunday 9/28

The HG6 Event came and went... another one for the FNN history books. :Big Grin:
Hang in there everybody, I will post a new "Closing Statement" thread in a day or so with lots of details and photos. :Wink:

Now for the day after report...

There I was Saturday morning, at the registration table of the HG6 event, busy handling some details when words started coming in from the sand of some epic fishing happening. Somebody said there was a wide open bite of Bonito in the surf. :Shocked: What?!? I've never caught a Bonito from the surf... I ran to my car to grab my rod and waders... oh, wait a minute, I didn't bring my rod and waders. :LOL: The truth of the matter is, I haven't fished the last four HG events, there's just way too much to do. :Wink: Then more news comes... Mackerel being caught (I never caught one of those from the surf either), big Corbina and Yellow Fin Croaker being caught, short Halibut, legal Halibut, Leopard Sharks and more Bonito. :EyePop:

Adults were catching them... little kids were catching them, veterans were catching them, newbies were catching them... :Surprised:

It was killing me... I was totally elated for all the derby anglers, but wished I was in the suds with them... :Envious:

Anyways... a few of the S.W.A.T. guys decided to come back the next day (Sunday), hoping to get a piece of the hot action and I was one of them. :Razz:

We all met up at the HG6 A.O. at grey light and went to work... I was thinking to myself "It's my turn..." The goal for the morning was to get my first Bonito from the surf. :!!!:

As soon as there was enough light to start casting, bait fish started flying out of the water. There were boils and birds were diving everywhere... Mike and Don were hooking one Bonito after another on the Krocodile. I started out throwing the LC and kept hooking up too, but I couldn't get a frickin' Bonito. The first 8 or 9 fish I hooked into were either a Smelt, a Queen Fish or a Mackerel. I even got a Lizard Fish. :mad: The Mackerel was cool, because I never caught one of those from the surf before either, but damn it, I want a Bony!!!

Mike and Don had a good laugh watching me pull a fish on the sand and stomping my feet in frustration because it wasn't the target species. All the while they were hooking Bonito after Bonito... I decided to switch to a Kastmaster.

Finally, Mike and I get a double hook up... and wouldn't you know it, mission accomplished, I got my first surf Bonito. :Dancing Banana:

What a fun morning in the surf following a successful HG event... life is good and God is great! :Big Grin:

I got myself a 6 species morning. Smelt, Queen Fish, Mackerel, Lizard Fish, Bonito and Halibut. Can't believe no Perch were caught. :Surprised:

Mike, Mike and Don... good time Brothers! We finally got our chance to slay them. :Big Grin:

It was fun getting in the surf this morning. Been too long. Quite a few species and firsts for me today too. First mack, bonito, and butterfly ray. Then the micro pancake and the giant smelt. Nothing big... but still fun... minus all the LDRs.

Thanks again for a great HG event. Always good to see everyone... Except Bones of course.


oh man... almost forgot my 6th species caught yesterday.... ANCHOVY. hahaha

I wish the wind hadn't picked up so much on Saturday, after the event, it would have been fun to pull on some bonito.

Very cool that you guys got back out and you were able to accomplish your mission! I couldn't believe it on Saturday when you told me you had not caught a bonito from the surf before.

I think the combination of getting old and being out of shape is taking it's toll, cuz I was REALLY close to not showing up yesterday. Man was I sore and tired from HG6!:Shocked: Glad I dragged my sorry rear out of bed though cuz it was a blast fishing with you guys. Pretty amazing how much life there was out there. It seemed like the bite and conditions had taken a little bit of a downward turn from the day before which makes our timing for HG6 even better...don't think we could have hoped for better fishing than we had that day.:Wink: Great to see you and Mike (Midgettosser) get that new species crossed off your lists. Now we just have to get that "other" illusive fish with stripes crossed off your species list...epic story to come!:Twisted::Wink:

HAHAHAHAHA thats funny we were all talking about going back out the next day to. We wanted to get an earlier start to see if we could land some more corbina. Glad you finally got you Bonita!!! unfortunatly the rest of my weekend was filled with cleaning wadders and my trailer to get ready for our next camping trip to the sierras so we didnt make it back out now I wish we did.

Good times with my brothers.....besides Midgettosser Mikey of course!..... Damn....The silver bullet didn't work after the full moon cycle. Don't worry Mikey...you have a MAJOR head start on the Halloween costume this year...LOL
What I loved about this outing more than anything was that we were all sleep deprived...sore as hell....but...we were on a mission. So funny how this group of guys have hung major Tuna this season off shore and still show up on a local beach after a grueling day just to catch a bunch of micro fish and share the friendship we have developed throughout the years. Doesn't get better than that...IMHO
It was truly a pleasure boyz!
