Planned an over nighter to avalon for the wife's birthday. Made reservations a month early obviously not knowing that residual affects of a hurricane was gonna make things pretty interesting. The day before, cat express had to turn boats around because the waves were to rough to dock at the landing. We get to long beach at 530 am to take 615 boat over. The high speed cat wasn't running because of the problems the day before so we loaded on the little mono hull for a fun 75 min roller coaster and got off around 730. Figured we'd get in a few casts right off the landing before walking to town. Waves were crashing, water was murky so I tied on a 4 inch bh sexy smelt on a 3/4 oz jig that I just glued some giant 3d eyes on and started burning it through kelp stringers. Took a few casts to find them then BAM!
44932
Got bumps on every cast
44933
Tied on a 3 inch on the wife's rod and she got her some
44934
44935
Dropped the shot in the rocks for a sculpin

1 1/2 hrs and six checkers later we walk to town. There was yellow caution tape closing down all the beaches from lovers cove to descanso. The board walk was strewn with sand and gravel. All the store fronts were barricaded with sand bags. A life guard said the waves crashed over the wall and washed down the board walk. From the casino we were watching dozens at descanso move sand back to the beach.
After more walking, shopping, eating and drinking, I talk the wife into walking down to the end of the casino jetty. Got to the spot around 2 pm. Be for I could get my line wet my wife casts the swimmer and gets hooked up. She thought she was snagged but something starts steadily taking drag. I'm thinking bat ray. I leave my gear and watch her fight a slow battle. Her pole is loaded with 8 lb floro so she kept pressure without busting off. 10-15 minutes it starts running back to shore and we see a 3 ft leopard take her right under the rocks and snap her off. She was pissed and took a break. I throw the 4 inch bh for 4 nice calico.

This was the biggest. Tapped out at 18 inches.
Called it quits after an hour and found our room. Had some local caught blackened yellow tail and drinks at the lobster trap, did some messing around and called it a day.

Woke up late. Had some heuvos rancheros and bloody Mary's for the hangovers and made our way to pebbly beach. Discovered the boat yard in disarray

44939
That sail boat crashed into the laundromat. I feel so bad for everybody who was affected. Here we r fishing and they're picking up the pieces.
So back to it....
Got to the end of pebbly beach and tied on the lc fm. Cast diagonally from the rocks and got hooked up

44941
Got 3 before the surf got to crazy and headed back.
Did some partying with the locals and some straight chillaxing til 8 pm when we headed back to the boat landing for the trip back. Of course we had to get the lines wet one more time. I get a ferocious pull casting toward open water but comes off quick. Then I hook one
44942
Then the birthday girl catches the largest calico of the trip!
44943
Boat was tieing up so I didn't measure it but I'd guess 19 inch.
Took the big boat back to wrap up a bitchen trip.

Thanks for reading

WOW!:EyePop: That boat up against that building is crazy. I've been out of town and heard that the swell was up while I was gone but didn't realize how bad it was till I talked to a few people about all the damage. Sounds like you and the birthday girl made a great trip out of it! Nice going on the checkers and rattler.

Hi ya murphy,

It's always terrible to see devastation and damage at such a beautiful location as Catalina Island but Mother Nature has a mind of her own!

But at least Father Poseidon stepped up for you ... and managed to reward you guys with an excellent fish count!

"Congratulations" to your wife "the BD Girl" with the largest Calico of the trip! Good times and good memories with your best friend ..... PRICELESS!!

I look forward to meeting you and your wife at the up coming HG-6 Event!

Thanx for the fish report with pic'!

Nice going, and way to go on the preserving, nice calico shots, the island used to be one of favorite places to spend a couple of days, not so much any more, their prices for overnight stays are ridiculous,I'd rather go to Morro Bay,Port San Luis, and other spots north, sorry to vent and jack your thread!

Howdy Murph,
Looks like you ended up with some nice numbers out of that mud hole...
Who would've thought that the East facing side of the island would have been hit that hard!
Thanks for sharing,
Robert

Yeah man saw how crazy it was on the news. I grew up fishing avalon area. We would go for a week ever summer. Love fishing the mole. Next time you're out there try renting a boat. Ive nailed some nice fish from a rental out there.
