We Arrived at the lake @545 Second in line beautiful morning. Lake lice start coming early (wait im Mr lake lice). Gates open @615 start off looking for boils didn't see any...There are only so many cove. I will find them! So we anchored up starting getting bite but we couldn't land them one came unbutton at the boat. So out came the rigs, No love my boat engines are not made for trolling, I turn one off still no good. Time for a trolling motor. went back to the bait and wait spot no love. My brother tried some sauce i had in the boat AND IT WAS ON! I Just need to cut my chucks in half. Landed my first striper. We ended the day with seven. I'm learning the Lake. I had to wash blood off my boat lol. I WANT TO THANK ALL WHO GAVE ME INPUT AND ADVICE..USE NEW GUYS REALLY NEED IT!!

hey! saw you out there yesterday. We were the only boat trolling for a while and baited a little. The lake was boiling everywhere, but mainly small stripers.

Got there late, 8:30 and left around 4pm.

That area you were at produced some troll fish for us, but most of the boils were at different areas.

Thanks DF...Yes at 220 HP its fast..@ 1800 Lbs do you think i could use a trolling motor to troll?

Wow 220HP I bet it is fast, My BassCat weighs 1245 lbs with a 200 HP and it is 75+mph. At idle I go just under 5mph with my current 26 pitch prop, my 24V 82 lb thrust trolling motor on high speed will push/pull me at about 3.5 mph. A trolling motor might do it but you would not have much battery life, I would make up a drift anchor or drag a bucket behind to slow you down.

the topwater fish are small for what i saw. we also baited for a lunch break and picked up the biggest fish for the day on that. Keep at it, the area you were at is a good area.... u guys could have moved out a little deeper though. A bit close to the rocks.

Hell yeah... PBC!

Enjoy the process of learning and becoming a better Striper fisherman. Take every bit of what you learn from these guys on this site and take it to the lake and learn even more. That's what I try to do and it's rewarding every time out. Even the slow days.

in the defense of guides we often times save people money from buying the wrong kinds of rods and reels and tackle , some people what to get up to speed as fast as they can ,and learn about a lake and about the stripers. they don't what to make ten trips to the lake before they figure it out. most of the good trollers on here have either gone out with me or directly copied me .some befriended me just to find out exactly what I was doing , others copy the search patterns ive developed at places , some name swimbaits after them selves when I had started and had already stopped using there thing before they were ever members on this board. some on here aren't man enough to tell the truth. I am big bass frank turned me and trolly onto the u-rigs way back , he got turned on by old man john the O/G urig master , I took what I was shown and moved it forward ten times over , the trolling was the easy part because I had already been a master troller of big holdover trout.some guys on here want to beat there chests and claim how great they are ,well let them keep on trying......good luck with youre path on figuring out mr stripey..............

By the way, what hp outboard do I need for my 17' bayliner for trolling?

You don't need much. I thought that I would put a kicker on my boat when I had a 150horse 2 stroke on it. The fuel consumption trolling was terrible. I replaced the motor with 115horse 4 stroke and now I'm sure that I don't need one.

I've trolled with small motors on friends boats. IMO The small propellers have less bite and that makes controlling the boat in wind more difficult. You have to throttle forward to overcome the wind and then the boat takes off. I like using the larger 4 stroke, the bigger propeller makes a big difference in control authority.

If you can't troll slow enough there are ways to slow it down. If it costs too much to troll, you might want to consider the kicker motors designed for pontoon boats the bigger propeller makes it more affective in the water.

i will say that TO is really worth the money.

To me, time is money, and if i never went on a guide trip, i wouldn't be here today.

I realized fishing is really all about knowledge, the more you know, the easier it is to get to the fish. To cuts the learning time in half. When i go to fish i want to catch as many fish as possible within that time period. I don't want to spend 20 trips learning how to catch stripers so i took a guide. I would love to slowly try to figure it out, but if i can get it done right the first time, i might as well.

I would still highly suggest you do a half day or full day with TO. I guarantee he will show you how to double your catch overnight. He's that effective. The castaic bite will change in the upcoming few months so it would be great timing. Heck you can even ask TO to take you on your boat.

Of course, the next steps is to practice, and soon you will be at limits. Keep it up!
