On my very first surf session last year I had the luck of catching perch after perch and a guitarfish with camo sand worms which was a surprise to me. That day however I also got a couple of bites that rattled me because after the bite my fishing line snapped (6 lb mono). All this time I have been thinking that halibuts are to blame for those incidents. What are your thoughts? Fast Forward to this year: My goal this year has been to catch a legal halibut from the surf so I decided to target this area with braided line and an LC. Fishing conditions appeared to be perfect to me, but after an hour of fishing there was nothing to show for it. After thinking to myself "4 more casts" I did my first cast to the right and thats when it happened! I am retrieving my LC and it gets hammered making my retrieve stop and I feel the fish possibly going to the bottom in around 3-4ft of water, I pull my rod and bendo! I feel the fish move but then it stops again (going to the bottom?) When I reel and pull my rod again I look out in the distance and see a flat fish surface from the water as I pull the rod to keep the tension but then the unthinkable happens... the fish and LC are gone!!! (This could have been the legal I have been searching for) :Embarrassed: Yes another bad knot! It shouldn't happen to me anymore but it still does

P.S if you catch a halibut with a zebra american shad LC it could very well be the halibut that laughed at my expense

What # braid did you use? Lite # braid will break ...... I've watched a brand new $20 lure fly as my 30# braid snapped on a bad cast.
I personally use 55# Diawa Samurai and tie off my LC's with the Uni-knot.
I use the Palomar knot when I drop shot.

It sounds to me like you hooked into a toad of a Calico.

They hit real hard and then head straight down to the bottom and tuck into the kelp or structures and stay down. You just have to wait them out and then you'll feel them when they swim clear of the structure. That's when you reel them in.
A rookie mistake is to put the wood to them and try to PTO them out of their protected area. They will eventually come out and play. Be patient.

For tying a LC to your line, a Palomar knot is good knot and useful but the uni knot is actually shown to be stronger.

44810

It's basically the same knot as the fish-n-fool knot.

Bummer about the lost fish and LC. I don't use braid very often, but I know there are "braid specific" knots because braid has a tendency to slip. Braid manufacturers usually include a list of knots in the packaging. Putting a drop of super glue on your braided knots can also help with this.

I stick with good ol' mono. If your worried about losing lures try some 12-15lb P-line CXX using a palomar knot. Not the best casting wise, but strong as hell. The hooks on my LC usually bend or break off when I get hung up.

I hate it when that happens...
But that's what keeps you coming back for more. :Envious:
The Palomar knot is pretty good. But I've never had any problems with a double cinch knot.
