I went on the pride a week and a half prior and loved it so much i decided to Charter my own 16pack trip with friends.
We ended up with 17 people, 2 people from BD. Most of my friends have never fished but after seeing my pictures from the previous trip, they all jumped on the chance to catch their own tuna.
At the landing the anticipation was strong. You could feel it in the air. The voyager was running late coming back to the docks, which is always a good thing for me. As we were waiting, we heard that the Mexico BFT ban was lifted so that was also another good thing.
This night just so happened to be the super moon so i was unsure how that would change the fishing.
We all board the boat around 10 and get our gear ready. The bait barge luckily had a mix of good chovies and nice deans.
I got my skunk off at the barge with a 6 inch sculpin haha.
We left the barge and by then it was close to midnight. Headed down to the bunks and slept until 5am. Never a good sleep, i'm 6'3 so my legs are always hanging off the side.
Wake up and see that we are surrounded by the whole fleet. Every single boat was within a mile of us. I also notice that we are right next to a pen.
after 30 minutes, we drop some bait in the water since we are just sitting around, no hits. As soon as grey light comes, we reposition the boat and I drop my 25# rig. I get hit pretty quick and it takes off. The line is peeling like no other and i feel i am outclassed. After a 20minute fight, the BFT snaps my line.
I rerig and one of the deckhands helps me get on a fish on a 40# rig. This fish pulled like a freight train. I fought it tooth and nail, for over an hour. My body was pretty shot, barely surviving at one point using the rail, but even the rail was not enough. the last 10 minutes, i just try to power it up, and finally we see color. After color, we make a quick gaff.
Fish comes up and we estimate it to be 75#. WOOT! The captain, 10 min earlier also brought up a big 75# as well.
At this point, we decide to leave the fleet looking for some schools since we spent 1.5 hours at that one stop only for a few bft fish.
The next 2 stops were a very good and steady pick. Always 4-5 people hooked up. Since my friends were new, the crew really helped out everyone get on fish. This is the best crew i've ever fished with! We would pick them off on the troll every now and then as well. On one troll hit, i dropped a megabait on the slide and was instantly hooked into a yft.
We fished late into the day for an overnight which just shows how awesome the crew is. We made a final stop on some birds and i was the first to get my line in the water. no more than 5 secs i was on. In the next 20 min, i brought up 4 yft. Since we were running late we couldnt stay long.
On the way back everyone was tired and just pooped from a hard day of fishing.
Final count, limits of YFT and 3 BFT(2 75#)
I really want to thank the Voyager and the whole crew: Todd, Mike, Jason, Jason, Casey.
It was one for the books....
