First off let me tell you that this was the best day of surf fishing we've ever had. Nicol and I were lucky enough to end up with a guided trip by SWAT that we won at the raffle from the HG5 event last year. It was an honor to fish with these guys and I cant say enough about the generosity and enthusiasm Wingnut and the rest of SWAT showed to us that day. You know that someone who says "If you guys catch a legal halibut today it will make my month" has a heart of gold. We thank you for everything you guys did to make our trip a memorable one. And now on to the report :Big Grin:

Alarm went off at 3:15 am  and we were on the road at 3:45. Got to the AO (I think that's what you guys call it) at 5 o'clock on the dot. Wingnut met us there we geared up and headed to the surf. Nicol and I don't really fish LCs (after today that will change) so we didn't really have the arsenal needed to catch the big boys. Wingnut was gracious enough to hook us up with some.

We hiked down to the beach and Don Bachiboy and SP Dan was already down there. A little later Raney Raneman and Peter PTN joined us.

Swell was 1-3 feet and conditions looked perfect (from what we could see because it was still dark lol). Second cast I hook up and end up landing my first WSB ever. At that point I knew it was going to be a good day. A couple minutes later Nicol lands her first fish of the day a nice little calico. We continued fishing up and down the beach landing a variety of fish halibut, calicos and even a couple perch lol. I hooked up with a nice calico a little over 17 inches. My PB calico ever and it was from the surf WOW!!.

As we got down to the end off the beach we started fishing this one spot that look super fishy and we stuck Nicol in the sweet spot because she hadn't landed a halibut yet. I saw a pretty good size swell building and warned Nicol but it was too late. It took her out and under she went. LOL all we could do was laugh. Wingnut was rolling and had to get a picture as she came crawling out of the water.

At this point we were both soaked Nicol was freezing and my waders had about 5 gallons of water in them so Wingnut taught me the old handstand trick and it worked like a charm. We continued fishing our way back down the beach and nicols says "I just want to catch a halibut so I can take a break to warm up". Fishing started to slow down around 9ish but we kept pushing on landing a few more and also taking a couple more waves over my head. As we got back down to the other end of the beach we hadn't caught anything for a little bit and Nicol was thinking we were done for the day and all of a sudden she hooks up. HALIBUT!!!! she lands it and takes a pic and was stoked because she could finally take a break.

We finished up around 10ish and headed back to the truck. Note to self walking back to the truck with waders full of water was not a good idea. It kicked my butt. Great day Great People and a Great experience. thanks to all who were there. Now I bet you want to see some pics so here you go.

Total fish count for the day was 3 short halibut, 2 calicos one being legal and a short WSB for me. Nicol had a short halibut, a short calico and a perch. Wingnut had 2 legal halibuts, 5 or 6 shorts, a couple calicos I think, a perch and a lizard fish. And not sure on the rest of the guys totals.
All fish were released!

Getting ready to hit the surf.

Well, that was a very enjoyable morning for me... I had a great time watching the two of you in action. :Big Grin: Right off the bat, I could see that you guys were excited and ready for some combat fishing. You guys jumped into battle and never looked back. You two can definitely hold your own... :Thumbs Up: Nicol was quite the trooper. Taking on that rogue wave, getting rolled and STILL hangs on to her rod, very impressive! I think that if I would have been taken out that hard, you would probably find me limping back to the car, lol  But no, Nicol sucked it up and kept on fishing. Like I told you guys when we were gearing up, bring a waterproof jacket... I bet you guys will have one from now on. :Envious:

The fish count for everybody was quite good. I managed two barely legal Halibut, but I wished that Peter and Raney's buddy could have landed that big fish that almost spooled him, whatever it was...

I was testing out for the first time the LC Surf Pointer 115. Couldn't get comfortable throwing it for the longest time. But when I got the hang of it, I caught a couple of fish including one of the barely legal Halibut. I will put the 115 to the test a few more times before rendering my final decision, but as of now, I still prefer the 110. The 115 dives a little too deep for my liking, but it does cast a little farther. I can also see why it cost much less than the 110. The graphics is not as detailed, the plastic feels thinner, even the lip is thinner and there's no split ring on the nose. I'm an ardent Lucky Craft supporter, but "cheaper" doesn't translate to "better" in my book.

It was nice to see Dan, Don, Peter and Raney out there too...
You two just got a little taste of what the S.W.A.T. Brotherhood is all about. Some people "get it", some people never will... you and Nicol definitely "gets it..."

We'll see you back out on the sand sometime soon, or at the very latest, at the HG6 event.

This is the perfect report leading up to HG6 and my favorite of the year! Congrats to both of you on a nice variety of fish and PB's. Glad you guys got to experience what it's like to fish SWAT style! Getting to the spot at O'DarkThirty, taking a pounding from the waves, but catching some nice fish in the end.

Pick up some lightweight waterproof jackets to wear over your waders and you'll be good to go. Won't keep you 100% dry, but it'll shield a good amount from going in. I used to wear a cotton hoodie underneath my waders before I met my SWAT brothas. It absorbed every drop of water...LOL

Outstanding Jeff and Nicol! You guys got me pumped for HG!

That's how the disease starts Sir:ROFL: ..... Perch are the species that you chase during the winter and spring when the water temps are in the mid 50's ....Just to keep your casting skills honed a bit until the REAL fishing takes off.
I met you quite a few years ago much further north.... Nice to see you have kept your skills up to par so you and your gal could tear it up SWAT style. You had the best guide for the job that's for sure.
Keep up the hard work and you shall be rewarded!

Thanks for sharing the good times with all of us!

Jeff ....... "Congrat's" on your 17" Toad of a Calico and for your first WSB from the sand! WTG!!

You guys truly ... "get it"! :Beer Toast:

Thanx for the excellent fish report with pic's!

The moral of this session is .......... to have fun but "always wear your light weight fishing jacket" when wearing your waders.

SP Dan ...... <"))><

Yes dan we definitely learned that light weight water proof jackets are a key element in fishing with you guys and when we get out there by ourselves for that matter. Its was our pleasure to get to spend the day on the sand with you guys. Keep an eye out for our post from our next trip because they will be coming soon

When we succeed in planting a smile like the ones you two were wearing from our surf experience, we truly have touched yet another fisherman with our soul's. That, my friend, is what its all about. Share it forward, and bring some new stories to us in here, we love stories! Mikey

Great report and congrats on the PB!

It must have been surreal to fish with a bunch of S.W.A.T. all stars! When it comes to checkers, I don't know of anyone better to guide you than Don and Dan! They have put me onto my first, PB and frequent checkers. When it comes to halibut, Arthur, Peter and Raney are the masters! Keep at it with the LC, it is a game changer!

Also, like Jaysuun said, get yourself a lightweight rain/wind breaker. You can get some decent ones from Sports Authority or Chalet for about $40 (add in coupons for more savings!) but remember to rinse them thoroughly with fresh water as with any fishing gear. The zippers on most of the jackets are the things that you need to worry about the most on them with the salt water corrosion.

See you at HG6!

The LC is a proven winner. I predict a sizable collection in your near future. LOL

Lol so the fact you didn't see a lengthy report sort of speaks for itself. Sunked!!! The surf was a little too big and too much weeds we tried multiple spots but no luck. Gonna head back down south soon maybe
