I had a hard time finding info on shorefishing in Hawaii. So it was trail-and-error when I hit the shores of Maui. I was staying in Makena, in the south part of the island. I tried fishing a few spots, and found that the real challenge is not losing tackle in the rocks or reef, which is everywhere.

A float with a 3-4 foot leader using store bought shrimp or squid was recommended by the locals.

Here is where I did the most fishing, Makena Landing. The pole is a $12.00 Southbend from the Wal-Mart in Kahului.

Here is a filefish I caught with shrimp, a good fighter:

I switched to really small hooks and got this wrasse:

The hotel I stayed at had some resident crab at the beach:

The people at the Maui Ocean Center said the Tiger Shark is a gentle, docile animal...Whatever!

It was a great two weeks, but I am actually happy to go fish in the familiar waters where have a little more knowledge(because of FNN contributors, of course).

Great pics!

I would love to run some spoons through those crystal clear waters.....one of these days.

Thanks for sharing!

Mahalo for the nice report, brah! :thumb:

When I was there, they told us to avoid surf/shore fishing. Seems like the locals don't like to see the haole, especially the enlisted naval types, out on their beaches. So, I missed out. Didn't feel like getting pounded to poi by some pupule locals over some triggerfish.
