NOTICE: The 6th Annual Hunting Giants Surf Fishing Event will be held on Saturday, September 27th. :Big Grin:

We will post up a sign-up thread very soon. Put the date aside and come out to join us for what is sure to be another epic event!

The Report:

The good thing about being "unattached"... is that you can pick up and leave, go wherever, whenever, and do whatever you want...

A couple of weeks ago, I get a text from one of my Northern S.W.A.T. Brothers that peaked my interest.
Dave (Perchin' Dave) wanted to know if I wanted to recon a brand new location a couple of hours North of Santa Barbara. He sent me the coordinates via Google Maps and the area looked amazing... I told Dave to call Mikey (Exfactor) and the rest of the Northern Brothers and plan a trip during the 4th of July weekend as I plan to come up to spend a couple of days up there.

I had a busy work week and didn't get around to look for a hotel room in the Santa Barbara area for the weekend until Tuesday. I plan to drive up Thursday night 7/3, stay a couple of nights and come back Saturday night. There were no hotel rooms available... Santa Barbara was booked solid for the weekend.

I place a call to my American Express Concierge Service and within the hour, I had a hotel room for Thursday and Friday night. Quite pricey, :Surprised: but that's what I get for waiting so long to book... :Embarrassed:

The plan was to hit the surf locally in the Santa Barbara area early Friday, 4th of July morning for a few hours before the crowd arrives.
Then on Saturday, take a far trek North for the recon expedition. Mikey and Dave warned me that it will be a very physically demanding trip that involves a lot of driving, walking and hiking... I was thinking to myself... no big deal, I've driven, walked and hiked a long way to fish the surf before... I had no idea that this trip would be the farthest I've ever driven, the longest I've ever walked, and the hardest I've ever hiked to reach any beach to fish the surf.

Friday - July 4th.

Friday morning, I met up with the gang at grey light. We plan to fish for 2-3 hours and then go to breakfast.
Mikey (Exfactor), Dave (Perchin' Dave), Brad (Dawn Treader), Roy (Q3FishBoy), Bill (Which Way Out) and Robby (Bill's nephew) were all in attendance.

I found out that in my haste to leave town Thursday night, that I forgot to bring my wading jacket. I will have to go without one this morning and buy a new one after the session.

Conditions were poor, a bit swelly and heavy salad...
Mikey caught a short Halibut and I only caught two dinky Perch. I think the rest of the guys only got Perch as well...
I fished hard and was completely soaked without my wading jacket... oh well, today was just the warm up session... tomorrow will be the real deal.

My Dobyns and Daiwa Zillion Coastal set-up.

Mikey with the only Halibut of the morning...

Best part of the morning was breakfast!
We plan to meet at Bill's house a little later for a 4th of July BBQ.

After breakfast, Mikey and I went to Big 5 to look for a waterproof jacket for me.
The only waterproof jacket that I was able to find was a women's size large... it fits, I'm buying it!

We all met up at Bill's house later for the BBQ and hang out for awhile...
Steaks, Ribs, Corn, Beans... yummy!

Mikey was the designated BBQ chef.

After the BBQ, I passed on the fireworks show and went back to the hotel.
Mikey was picking me up at 2:30am sharp and I was in bed by 10:00pm.

Saturday - July 5th.

Mikey and I met up with Dave and Brad at their friend Scott's house and the five of us took off on the long drive North...
This is definitely the furthest I've ever driven to any surf fishing spot.
When we got there, we parked the car and walked/hiked for 3 miles... yes, THREE miles to the beach. :EyePop:
And we were going to fish the entire 3 miles back along the sand!

Getting ready for the long hike... a light drizzle kept us cool during the long trek.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140645.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140645.jpg.html)

We were in such a remote area that at one point, we ran into a pack of Wild Pigs... the biggest one was a male that must have weighed at least 300 lbs and had tusks or fangs. :Surprised: I'm glad that they all took off instead of charging us. I was thinking to myself that all I had to do was to outrun one of these old guys that I was with, lol  There were five of us and I was the youngest one in the bunch.
Anyways, finally, we worked our way down a steep cliff to the sand, geared up and hit the suds.

I was the first one to make a cast and on the 2nd cast... fish on!
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140652.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140652.jpg.html)

Then another...
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140650.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140650.jpg.html)

And another...
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140647.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140647.jpg.html)

Conditions were great, swells were relatively flat ( I didn't even have to wear the new "ladies" jacket that I bought ), wind was calm and the salad was minimal. A constant fog hovered around us all morning. The trenches were amazing, wide and deep. Mikey and I couldn't believe that there weren't anything more sinister lurking in those troughs. But we figured that there were so many Perch, that they beat everything else to our lures. :Envious:
The Perch action was insane... Mikey and I were throwing the LCs and we both caught over 50-60 Perch... 90% of them in the 12-15+" range. :EyePop: Dave, Brad and Scott were tossing the 3" Kalins Motor Oil Red Flake grubs and caught close to or over 100+ Perch each!
I was sure that I would get my first 16"+ Barred Surf Perch here... but I caught 5 that were 15"+, the biggest was 15.5".
I think Brad, Dave and Scott got a couple of 16 inchers... I didn't get many pics of their catch because we were so spread out on the sand.

I didn't blurred or black-out the pics of this report... (the fog did the job for me, lol) If you're able to find this place, more power to you, enjoy!

I caught so many big Perch that the trebles on the LC were getting annihilated... I changed LC's four times that morning. :Surprised:

I can't believe how fat these Perch were... spawning season is done right? None of the fat ones were popping any babies... must be gorging themselves with Sand Crabs.

We didn't see another soul for hours until we worked our way back near where we parked the cars.
We walked over 6 miles that morning... :EyePop: We were all totally wiped out!

What an epic morning of Perch fishing... the most intense Perchin' experience I've ever been a part of. :Thumbs Up:

We hopped back on the freeway heading back South when Mikey asked me if I have ever been to Jalama Beach and had a "famous" Jamala Burger...
I said I've never been there and we all made a detour off the freeway towards Jalama Beach.

Mikey, Dave, Brad, Bill, Roy and Scott... It was an absolute pleasure spending a couple of days fishing the Northern Coastline with you guys. I will never forget this trip... for the camaraderie, friendship and last of all, for the epic Perch fishing. :Big Grin:

Thank you all again for doing all the homework and planning for this memorable weekend... I am indeed spoiled. :Envious:

This week is the anniversary of Dana's (Fisherman 57) passing... and he was on my mind all weekend. I'm glad that I was with my Brothers... Family, Friends, Fun & Fishing... that's what it's all about.

I hope everybody had a fun and safe 4th of July weekend.

One hell of a trip there guys. I've always wanted to fish that area but the distance has always hindered me from making the attempt. I can remember just a few times (Like two) when I got into a pig fest like that and it was in the northern region as well. I think Don hit it right on the head that there were so many aggressive perch within the casting zone that any other sinister species didn't nave a chance to hit your baits. Kinda makes me wonder if you had brought a big bait rod and tossed a large perch swim bait further out and let it sink just MAYBE a big old halibut might have been lurking there because that's what they feed on in that region.
I noticed that Mikey had his waders in a backpack at the start of the trek...Now that's a clear indication of a LONG hike ahead...LOL
I also noticed that you didn't wear that ladies size large jacket buddy....Hellooooooooo....LOL
Finally.....I also noticed you went with the good old work horse Luna 253 in the slab slayage.... Whaaaa Happened?

And Ya thought I don't pay attention

Arthur,

finally after a pretty long trying week I've had a chance to check out a few reports. I had to grin when I saw your comment on the prices of hotels in Santa Barbara. Allison is home from Madrid for two months so I need to concentrate on spending all the time I can with her and Em. I asked the two of them where they wanted to go for a few days and they both said the wanted to go to Santa Barbara..........I checked the prices of some accommodations and.......WOW!
Then I was thinking what the heck is the attraction? Well, now that I see your report I have my answer........Big Big Big Perch! Well now, Hmmmm.....Let's see.....yep, if I play my cards right I can sneak out of the hotel early, get into some of the Northern Surf perch bite and make it back before they're ready to see the sights?
Question is now, how do I pack the surf gear without them noticing? :Secret:

Great report My Friend and it is always cool to see the Northern Chapter of S.W.A.T. in action! I'm glad to see you got out and got the waders wet. :Thumbs Up:

It was early in the morning when we arrived. I was excited. An untouched beach. And then I saw it, tracks all over the beach. I thought that someone else had been there before we arrived. Darn. But when I looked close, these were animal tracks. Of the tracks I could identify, I saw Deer (a baby fawn), wild pig, coyote & mountain lion. And with the exception of the two 350 pound pigs we saw on the hike there, we didn't actually see any wildlife but it was cool to see all the animal signs anyways. Wild!

http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa363/davesomm/panoramaJalama-Version3_zpse0cb8449.jpg (http://s1194.photobucket.com/user/davesomm/media/panoramaJalama-Version3_zpse0cb8449.jpg.html)

Here's a photo of Dawn Treader (Brad Bayley) and the overall structure of the beach. There were so many places to fish in the huge trough. We all felt fortunate that we were there when we were because there was a lot of kelp on the beach and if the tides were different, all of that would have been in the water.

http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa363/davesomm/IMG_1288_zps3e9be353.jpg (http://s1194.photobucket.com/user/davesomm/media/IMG_1288_zps3e9be353.jpg.html)

I apologize for not taking many pictures, the bite was on and I didn't stop to take my camera out of my fishing jacket. Here's another photo of Brad Bayley (Dawn Treader), the tide was a bit low here but the ocean was WILD looking. This one trough was huge and produced many fat fish. I couldn't get Brad to move from his magic spot a few minutes before taking this photo and further down the beach, here's why. ("Dave, I just caught five 15.5" perch in a row, why should I move?) What a nice problem to have, oh yeah!

http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa363/davesomm/IMG_1289_zps45c8ed4a.jpg (http://s1194.photobucket.com/user/davesomm/media/IMG_1289_zps45c8ed4a.jpg.html)

It has been a long time since I've seen sand dollars on the beach. Hmm ... I didn't know they came in black too!

http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa363/davesomm/IMG_1299_zps11e3efaf.jpg (http://s1194.photobucket.com/user/davesomm/media/IMG_1299_zps11e3efaf.jpg.html)

It was fun to see 'nature' showing off. This cliff was amazing. Every direction I looked was a "picture" so I took a 360 degree view of this seen here (which makes the height of the cliffs short, but it is cool anyways.)

Fantastic session and one heck of a recon! 6 miles! Good lord! Must have been nice fishing out there and having all that beautiful beach to yourselves. Great report Arthur. I don't know about the 6 mile hike, but the rest of the trip looked amazing! Two days out with the boys. A ridiculous amount of pigs  And the structure and scenery.. beautiful wow. Im jealous.
The only thing left is catching that monster that we all know is lurking around that AO. Next time.

Hope all is well Commander!

I'll talk to you soon

I'm glad that we were able to get you on the charter bro... epic Tuna trip!

Arthur,

finally after a pretty long trying week I've had a chance to check out a few reports.

:Thumbs Up:
Hope you are able to get out there when you were up there Terry.
I'm really looking forward to hanging out with you and Trolly at Dana's Memorial Event at Irvine Lake next month. :Big Grin:

Epic Perch fishing brotha. :Thumbs Up:
If I wasn't out of town I would have come along for sure.
I miss fishing with Mikey and the gang up north.
Can't wait for our Tuna trip tomorrow. It's going to be fun. :Big Grin:
You come with us next time bro.
The Tuna trip was quite epic. Watching you guys eat the Tuna Hearts was priceless.
See you tomorrow bro!

Wild!

Here's a photo of Dawn Treader (Brad Bayley) and the overall structure of the beach. There were so many places to fish in the huge trough. We all felt fortunate that we were there when we were because there was a lot of kelp on the beach and if the tides were different, all of that would have been in the water.

It has been a long time since I've seen sand dollars on the beach. Hmm ... I didn't know they came in black too!

Here's a rainbow colored rock, how cool is that!

It was fun to see 'nature' showing off. This cliff was amazing. Every direction I looked was a "picture" so I took a 360 degree view of this seen here (which makes the height of the cliffs short, but it is cool anyways.)

SP Dan ..... <"))><
Thanks Dan, I really enjoy fishing with our Northern S.W.A.T. Brothers.
Good luck fishing this weekend my friend. :Big Grin:

Fantastic session and one heck of a recon! 6 miles! Good lord! Must have been nice fishing out there and having all that beautiful beach to yourselves. Surely there was something bigger in that awesome structure. Perhaps a perch pattern would've done the trick? LOL BTW how does that Zillion perform surf?
It was an amazing day Jason, you and Tess would really like the place.
The Daiwa Zillion Coastal is a nice reel and performed great, but I still prefer my Luna 253 for the surf.

Awsome report!! Those are some PIGGIES you guys got.
Thanks Bob! Long time no hear my friend. Hope you can come to the HG6 event.

Man what a beautiful spot! The part about the pigs was crazy! Epic report brotha, thanks for sharing.
