I decided to do my usual weekday recon so I can put Tess on her first legal of the year. Unfortunately, conditions weren't favorable but I went anyway just because. Got to the spot and began casting. HOOKUP! What's this?! Moving side to side and making some nice runs. I finally get it into the skinny and it puts a smile on my face. :Big Grin:
My first Bean on the LC! Taped out at 22.5 inches!

Fair Hooked! This thing fought harder than a WSB of the same size. Super fat too built like a bowling pin.

Thanks for the photo fellow surfer!

Farmed another fish and had a few taps, but that would be all for that day. Just one...but a good one!

So since surf conditions weren't ideal we decided to do a little kayaking today. We decided to venture a little further out and fish some kelp beds for the first time. Got there a little late (10am to be exact) so we weren't expecting to catch much. This was more of a recon session and just wanted to get our feet wet in the open ocean.
On our way out! Nice day to be out on the water. Ahhhhh so nice and calm in the harbor!

As we round the jetty, we are greeted with some decent sized swells. Yikes! Tess is freaking out and described it to me as being in the front seat of a roller coaster ride. hahaah

So we find some nearby kelp beds and drop our swimmies down. I've read about casting it down the kelp lanes, but this was impossible with the wind blowing one direction and the current going in another. Tying up to the kelp was out of the question as the high swells would have surely capsized us if we were anchored. All we could do is cast it out and drag our swimmies along the bottom.
As we are trying to figure things out, I get HAMMERED big time! This fish would not let up let! Fortunately, I had my drag buttoned down and was able to crank this fish up and away from structure.
A porker of a Sandie at 20inches! Coughed up what looked to be like little shrimps.

We continue to fish the same hole and then something cool happened. As Tess was reeling in her swimmie she sees a calico bolt out from the kelp to attack it. She's on for about 3 seconds when the fish gets unbottoned and then latches on to my swimmie that was trailing right behind LOL. I actually felt bad because it felt like I had stolen her fish. Sorry honey. :Envious:
I went on to catch 1 more dink Sandie before the swells began to pick up even more. We started to get the feeling that we were about to lose our lunch, so we decided to call it a day.
A short day, but it was a beautiful day to be out. It was nice to hit up kelp rather than docks for a change. We'll be back hopefully during calmer waters.
