Had a family fishing day for Memorial weekend. Took Dad and my boy out to Carlsbad kelp. Picked up some nice size healthy anchovies, and just achored up on the outside of the kelp. For 4 hours it was mostly wide open on small calicos, mackeral, and small cudas. Almost every bait got hammered within the top 15' of the water column. Using mostly bass rods with 10# line, it was really fun. My boy even got his first legal Cuda (we got 2 total), and one legal calico. I know we could've went deeper or moved around to find the bigger ones, but we were just having fun. Even had a sand bass come to the surface and steal the chovie from a hooked cudas mouth! Size 1 circle hooks, in the corner every time, and light egg sinkers. I even busted out the kroc and the fluke, instant bites. Lots of double hookups, and some triples. My thumb and pliers got a great workout. Next trip - I'll bust out the leadheads and plastics and work deeper.
