It has been a pretty epic start of a season for me I started learning and fishing some new areas this season instead of doing the usual La Jolla trips and it has paid off handsomely I have over 200 halibut under my belt this year, a few trophy yellowtail, my first and second trigger fish, and many other species.

Last Saturday I set out on a recon mission to look for some Ghost's in an area i never fished before on a yak I searched through the zone's all morning and had 1 short bite on the mac. A pretty darn slow day as I was searching around looking for the right kind I finally see the some solid worm marks on my Lowrance HDS the fish were stacked from 20' all the way down to the bottom. I had all my basic's covered one rod high, one in the middle, and on bottom. At this point I knew I was going to get bit I re baited my bottom rig sent it down and put it in the rod holder. Shortly after my rod loads up and I wind down on the fish in the rod holder this is when it went crazy, this sucker just starts dusting me no clicker on this rod as the fish decides to hit my Freshwater Swimbait setup a Calcutta 300D and a Pheonix 909H with 40lb Izor and very little 50lb braid. I was getting smoked I couldn't get my damn rod out of the holder since this thing was hauling *** it felt like I hooked a submarine. I finally get my rod out of the holder I probably had 20 wraps of braid left on the spool I had to clear my other 2 rods out of the way, one of my other lines was wrapped around my face and I was unable to reel it up. It was time to put my flippers to work I peddle my butt off to chase down the fish to try to gain my line back. About 20 min into the battle I gained less than half a spool of line back every time I gain the fish decides to go on a rampage and peel all of the line back off. At this point I am thinking to myself "What the heck do I have hooked?" No headshakes so no way its a seabass and seabass does not fight this hard. This bad boy had brute strength and and almost spooled me 3 times. By this time I had a couple spectators I had a huge sport fisher named Dan something and another boat cheering me on 30 or so minutes later I start eliminating the species this is definitely not a Bat Ray, it has way to much power speed and torque to me a BSB, its not a seabass, its May I do not know if there are many yellowtail in this zone WTF. I continue to chase this sucker down when I was on its tail the fish would hear me pedaling so it would take off again. I had to stop peddling and just work the fish slowly to the yak, almost an hour into it i look down and finally see a flash when the fish came to color my line was wrapped up with my other line so I started short pumping this beast to the surface and stick her with the trusty bamboo gaff. I yell out as loud as I could "HELL YEA!!!!" after seeing how massive this beast was.

This fish taped out at 47 1/2" it weight just shy of 40lbs bled. If it was not bled it would of went 40+ easy and would of beat my PB yellowtail thank you Kap Dan and Stephen for the pic and the cold beer. I am still smiling ear to ear and this fish came right in time for my memorial day weekend party.

On this particular day I ended up tieing up with 2 pigs on the yo yo I am unsure how big this beast was since i did not weigh it.

Unreal man!!!:EyePop: That's a hard enough fish to land on a big boat with a two speed much less a kayak and a Calcutta. That's an AMAZING accomplishment Jonathan!

Congrats!!!

Jonathan, congrats on the PB Yellow! That is an impressive fish from the yak and a crazy track record for a season that's not even over yet! Tess and I finally ventured away from our harbor comfort zone and found a few bass in the kelp bed. We're getting braver! LOL. I've been hesitant to hit you up for some kayak fishing because we rooks would hate to slow you down. I know you fish by the phrase "Go Big or Go Home" and today the swells got all little too big for us so we had to go home!

I was shaking my head in disbelief so much while reading your post that I wasn't able to stop.. it's 2 hours now and I'm getting whiplash.
You are crazy unreal, Jonathon. I finally get why you didn't settle for anything less than a Pro Angler.
More power to you..

Another monster yellow... I'm not surprised, I have been fishing with Jonathan for many years and every season he never fails to some how some way pull off some amazing catches that most anglers only dream of catching someday.. The fact that he makes most of amazing catches close to home in our local waters.. A lot like another friend of mine who some of you on this board might know.. His name is Arthur but he goes by Wingnut on the boards.. B) These guys always manage to pull it off. Don't ask me how..
