NOTICE: The 6th Annual Hunting Giants Surf Fishing Event is coming!
We are currently in the planning stages. The date and details will be announced soon…

The last time I posted a report was March 16th. Wow, has it really been over two months since the last time I hit the surf? Yes, sad but true… A ridiculously busy work schedule is to blame, among other things. But business comes first, if you can't take care of business, you can't take care of anything else...

In the last couple of months, I had to turn down and/or cancel dozens of invites from my S.W.A.T. Family to get out and fish. In the surf, on the kayak or out on the water, I just couldn't get away. Looking at the calendar a couple of weeks ago, I circled Memorial Day weekend as the weekend that I will make my return to surf, it's my home away from home, my second office. No matter what, I’m going fishing! :Big Grin:

While there’s plenty of action to be had locally, and my other S.W.A.T. Brothers have been doing quite well out there. I decided to take a little road trip to spend some time with my Northern S.W.A.T. Brothers. I gave Mikey (Exfactor) aka The Fishing Yoda a call earlier in the week and asked him to gather the troops, let’s hit the Santa Barbara surf on Sunday! So Mikey (Exfactor), Bill (Which Way Out), Dave (Perchin’ Dave), Brad (Dawn Treader) and Roy (Q3Fishboy) all went out at different times of the week to do some recons before my arrival. Thanks gentlemen for doing my homework for me, I'm so spoiled... lol

Mikey gave me a call the night before and laid out the attack plans for Sunday. We were going to hit multiple locations starting with grey light at a new A.O. that I have never been to. Wow, a new spot that I’ve never fished before? How exciting!
Mikey also issued a challenge to me. His exact words were, Arthur, let’s see if you can pull a "Rabbit out of the hat” at this spot. A personal challenge from Master Yoda, I considered it an honor. Sounds like fun I said, let’s do this!

I attended 5 o’clock mass Saturday evening and said an extra prayer… asking the Man above to watch over and protect me and my S.W.A.T. Brothers on our quest Sunday. I never ask to be blessed with any kind of catch… only that he keeps us safe whenever we go into battle.

I left the house at 3:30am, hopped on the 101 North for the long drive towards the Santa Barbara coastline. I was knocking on Mikey’s front door by 5:00am. We met up with Bill, Dave and Brad at the first A.O. and our boots were on the sand by 5:30am.

Bill (Which Way Out)

I was excited and filled with anticipation during the mile long walk and hike down to the spot. Always a treat to fish and learn about a new spot.
Beautiful and desolate… this spot definitely has potential.

Grey light conditions wasn't the best at this spot. Swells were kind of rough and the heavy salad presence made it hard to fish. A couple of the guys switched over to the Big Hammer swim baits/grubs and caught some Perch, but I stuck with the LC and grew more aggravated with every cast.

Mikey lands a big Shovelnose.

After a couple of hours, Mikey pulled the troops and we headed for the second spot.
I was thinking to myself as we were hiking out that I did not fulfill the challenge. I didn’t even get a bump on the LC the entire time.
Bad conditions was my excuse, but you know what they say about excuses… Damn, I just hate to fail. I didn’t know it, but later, I would get another opportunity to complete the challenge.

We headed to the next spot and conditions wasn't much better. Rough swells, limited water visibility and a heavy salad presence. We spent a few hours fishing every yard of that long beach and caught several short Halibut and some pretty decent Perch.

This is my dink 6”+ Barred Surf Perch. Hahaha

Then I saw a kayak angler fishing close to the beach pull out three short Halibut within a 10 minute span. I think he was drifting live bait. I decided to wade out a little further and poach his spot… :Envious: I was up to my neck bobbing around in the surf and the guys were calling me Bobber Boy for the rest of the day. lol

Success! My 4th legal Halibut of the year… not bad, since this was only my fourth trip to the surf this year.
23” legal Hali – Released. I made a pledge to myself to release every legal Halibut that I catch this Spring season.
Not like I've been doing a lot of fishing this Spring.

This is Marvin, a local we met out there on the sand. Nice to meet you Marvin and thanks for all the tips! :Big Grin:

Mikey rallied the troops again and we headed to the 3rd spot of the morning.
Conditions at the third spot was a big improvement from the previous two A.O.’s
Flat swells, clear water visibility and relatively free of salad. In the first 15 minutes, Dave and Bill hooked up to short Halibut. Brad and Mikey were getting hits also. I really thought that we had found where they were all stacked up and was ready to hammer them, but just as fast as the bite went off… it shuts down. I didn’t even get so much as a Perch tap on the LC in the couple of hours that we were there.

Dave nails a short on the 3" Kalins grub.

Tired and hungry, we decided to call it a morning and headed to get some lunch at the Outback Steakhouse.
Roy and his girlfriend Hunter met us there and we all shared an awesome lunch. :Big Grin:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140473.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140473.jpg.html)

After lunch, Roy, Dave and Brad went home and Mikey and I went to Bill’s house to watch the game and hang out for a bit. Mikey and I decided to go back in the surf for the evening bite at 6:30pm for the last couple of hours of daylight. Bill had dinner plans so we said our goodbyes and Master Yoda and I geared up and drove to the 2nd A.O. where I caught my legal Halibut earlier in the morning. When we got there, the parking lot was totally packed. Memorial weekend crowd was in full swing, with people all over the beach and in the water. It was getting late and I thought about just hopping on the freeway to get a head start on the long drive home.

Then the voice in the back of my head spoke up… it tells me that I haven’t completed Mikey’s Challenge yet… :Surprised: I said to Mikey, “Let’s go back to the first spot, I still have some unfinished business to take care of…” Mikey says, “Yes you do, let’s go!” So we took the short drive and there is where we made our last stand.

To our surprise, conditions have vastly improved since grey light at this spot. The swells have laid down quite a bit and the salad was settled in most areas allowing us to throw the LC more effectively.

We only have a couple of hours of daylight left and begin to carpet bomb the area with the LC. Side by side we methodically worked the beach, switching lead on the sand and moving back and forth, concentrating on deep spots and clear of weed areas. We saw some bait fish dimpling in the distance and some birds starting to dive here and there which are always a good sign.

Then it happened… I made a long cast to a submerge boiler, halfway back on the retrieve I felt a solid thump, then heavy pressure, followed by several head shakes… I immediately thought Halibut. But realized that I was wrong when line started peeling off the reel at a high rate of speed. :EyePop: The fish shot parallel to the beach and I caught a glimpse of the elongated silver shape and knew that I had a Ghost on the other end of the line. The fish made a sharp turn and headed full speed straight out to the silent scream of the drag on my Daiwa Luna 253. Mikey was standing by my side coaching me and providing words of encouragement during the battle. After a couple of strong runs, the fish basically threw in the towel, allowing me to gain back line quite rapidly and with a couple of perfectly timed waves… it came sliding up on the beach. There’s the Rabbit I was chasing… challenge complete! :Dancing Banana: Hugs and high fives with Master Yoda.

Hook up!

Roy & Hunter: Thank you for joining us for lunch. Glad to see that you both are happy and doing well. I’ll see you both at the HG6 Event.

Brad & Dave: HeyBrad, how did you like the “spread”? hahaha
Dave, thank you for paying your dues early and earning that hall pass to fish with me.
It was great hanging out with you guys, good times. Let me know when you’re ready to head South. I would love to show you guys some epic Perch spots. :Secret:

Bill: You’re not that un-coachable bro… I see that you take orders pretty well from the wife. :Big Smile: But on the water, now that’s a different story. Lol
Great job on what you’ve done so far on the house. I still say replace that yard with a Bass pond! Hehe
Thanks for coming with us my friend. I told you that you shoulda blew off dinner and went back to the surf with us.

Mikey: What can I say Yoda, you made it happen today. You called the shots and made all the right moves. Thank you for everything my Brother, but most of all, thank you for being YOU. You inspire people my friend and I appreciate all your words of wisdom. I should have listened to you and stayed for dinner… that was a 3 hour drive home. :Surprised:

On my extra-long drive home, I had time to reflect on this wonderful day. The most memorable thing about this day weren't the notable catches. Rather, it was the camaraderie and friendship with my S.W.A.T. Brothers. None of us cared who caught what or even if we caught anything. It was all about the company that we keep, the bonds that were reinforced, the memories that were made and relishing in the common passion that we all share. This is what it’s all about, “Family, Friends, Fun and Fishing”. A vision of a great man and a good friend, who no doubt, was with us in spirit on Sunday… Thinking of you Dana – Fisherman 57 forever…

Have a fun & safe Memorial Day weekend everybody.

Arthur (Wingnut)

I am thankful to all those people who ever said “No” to me. It was because of them, I did it all myself.

Arthur, My take on excuses is that they only satisfy the person giving them and I know you that wouldn't be acceptable to you.

I'm happy to see that you were able to set aside some time to get up north and make a northern assault with the SWAT Team. It may have started out slow for you but rather than utilize the "bad conditions" excuse you put it in high gear and made it happen! You are relentless My Friend!

I've always enjoyed your reports and this one was a pleasure to read. Great job and Congratulations on the "Ghost"! :Thumbs Up:

Looks like the good old times were reborn in your northern assault. Congrats on the Ghost and thanks for the invite but I had plans with the kids this weekend. The countdown continues to the date that they will be much further from me so I have to get in as much "Quality time" as I can get at the moment.
I did manage to make it out yesterday for the last hour of daylight though and Poseidon was kind to me too!

I decided to wade out a little further and poach his spot… I was up to my neck bobbing around in the surf and the guys were calling me Bobber Boy for the rest of the day. lol Success! My 4th legal Halibut of the year…

I know of -no- person who wades out further and deeper into the ocean than you Arthur. Hmm ... I wonder if they make waders that are 50% white and 50% red and round. Ha! (like the classic bobber!). Yes, persistence is key in matters of success and you definitely approached the water knowing that success was one more cast away. The fish count wasn't that high but the effort was at an all-time high for all those fishing. I saw the PRO in the entire crew. Swim-on-Bro! Enthusiastically Perchin' Dave

This episode was a continuation of the last trip up here, where all of us struggled, and Arthur unbelievably went the whole day without so much as a nibble. That trip was as humbling to him as if he was Job, and he has tormented over it all this time. When he showed up at my door that morning, there was a gleam in his eye, and his little boy excitement was overflowing from him. Our first stop proved to be less then ideal conditions, and only because I knew where some wiggles were hiding, did I manage to find one willing. the next stop wasn't much better, but I again found a baby butt to keep everyone trying. All of us hit the whole beach, and were sitting down watching him continue to work the spot where every cast brought a clump of kelp stuck to the LC. When he finally started back towards us, there was that asian funny grin on his face again, where he found a way to make it work. There were a few instances where I sat back, and watched my brothers all dilligently working the water, and I was touched by how special our small group of anglers are to me, all sharing our passion for the water. Finally, after lunch, and friends having to spend time elsewhere, Arthur and I ended up back where we started, and found a different beach from what we had in the morning, both of us casting our lures, working the area hard. Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I see him waving at me, all the while with a sharp bend in his rod, and i came running. Up comes this beautiful fish, clearly a beast on to the sand, and for a second i thought i heard trumpets playing from heaven. To say I was envious would be an understatement, but at that moment, it all became clear to me. How special a moment this was to be together at that one time, only the two of us on the beach, and the fish. I have always been an ardent fisherman, but Arthur is something very special in this world, he is a angler of men, something I strive for in my life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing that with me my friend.

Bonus Report - Sunday 6/1. New Species on the LC!

Santa Barbara last weekend... San Diego the next.
Decided to take a drive South to see if I can continue my legal Halibut streak.
I haven't fished this particular A.O. in a couple of years, it's a pretty good low tide spot. Talking to Don (Bachiboy), he couldn't get an extended hall pass to go with me but said that Nate (BBQSushi) will be down there with his family. Nate shot me a text and we agreed to join forces Sunday at grey light for a couple of hours before he had to take the family to Lego Land. :Envious:

I left the house at 4:00am and took the long drive South on the 5 Freeway... got to the A.O. at 5:30am. Nate got there around 6:00am.

Let me tell ya... I think somebody messed up on the swells predictions this weekend. The chart shows 1-2 ft, but I swear it was more like 3-4 ft.
Rough conditions and the waves were coming in at rapid intervals... the only saving grace is that the wind was calm and there were virtually no salad in the water.

By the time Nate met me on the sand, I already beached two short Flatties. I told Nate that they are here, even though conditions weren't ideal. Nate was wearing his wetsuit and looking like a member of Seal Team Six, lol... maybe I shoulda wore mine, lol

One of the two early morning shorts...

Even at low tide, I was having a tough time casting to a nice boiler rock structure... Nate had no problem doing so... :Envious:

I told Nate that I was getting bit pretty close to the shore... but Nate waded out anyway...
I proved my point by nailing a legal Halibut in the trench 20 feet in front of me.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140535.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140535.jpg.html)

Barely, legal, but it's a legal... 5 legals in 5 surf sessions this year. All 5 from different beaches. :Big Grin:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140537.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140537.jpg.html)

Released!
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140538.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140538.jpg.html)

This still feisty Halibut flopped out of my hand and went airborne upon release...
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140543.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140543.jpg.html)

I pull in another two shorts in about a 10 minute span and told Nate that they were hanging tight to the beach. I told him that he was wading past the sweet spot and that he's probably stepping on them, ha ha. But Nate continues his neck high surf assault on the boiler.
Hey Nate, you just stepped on one! Hahaha
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140540.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140540.jpg.html)

What happened next was so hilarious. I walked behind Nate with my boots still on the sand and made a couple of casts behind him.
Hook up!!! I yelled out to Nate, and he turn around to see me fighting the fish directly behind him... OMG, the look on Nate's face was absolutely priceless. :Big Smile:

Only a 21" short, but it again, proves my point.

I got 5 shorts and 1 legal by 9:00am. Not too bad...
Nate had to get going and I was going to give another nearby spot a try before heading home.
Brother Nate, had a great time fishing with you my friend. Hope the day at Lego land with the family was fun.

I have a theory, I think you waded out there to herd them all towards me right? What a pal...
Or maybe you fell for the Jedi Mind Trick...
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140544.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140544.jpg.html)

Off I went to the next A.O.
Conditions looked a little better here with the swells laying down a bit, so I decided to work this spot for another couple of hours.
Added one more short Halibut to my total for the day.
This one was so close 21.5" Could have been my second legal of the day. :Envious:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140539.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/P1140539.jpg.html)

Then this guy grabbed my LC...
My first EVER Spotfin Croaker... Whoo hoo! :Dancing Banana:
Excellent fighter. It's only a small one at 18", but fair hooked!

LOL! Arthur, I'm right there with you Brother........any time I go out now I don't go past my knees!

I can remember hitting the beach a couple times with you and Roberto. You guys were way up to your chests and all it took for me was one good wave to fill up my waders and that was it for me! Of course I turned my back to that wave but all the same.:Embarrassed:

I appreciated the early update and as the day wore on I kept looking at the phone for the second update. Great job out there Arthur. Another good day with a Good Friend. :Thumbs Up:

Nice going on the 5 for 5 and the bonus spotfin! That's a pretty dang productive trip there. Looking forward to getting on the sand with you again to see the 6 for 6...or 10 for 10 as it all unfolds.

I witnessed that Jedi mind trick first hand by brother Don many moons ago. I heard a small splash literally 3' from where I was wading. The splash was in fact a well placed LC by Don that quickly turned into a legal halibut right at my feet!

Excellent outing Arthur as usual, you continue to put the wood to the fish & that gives us all something to believe in!!!!

PS..My house is 2 minutes off the FWY you traveled if you make it down this way again. We could have had a spirited conversation during the ride on how Arizona is going to smoke your Trojans this upcoming football season...

Good morning Arthur,

For me .... sometimes a good ol' 1.5 hour road trip to an AO with the anticipation of it producing well is sort of accelerating for me because of all of the unknowns when I arrive. So many times .... I've arrived at a familiar AO only to be met with conditions that were totally different than what my INTEL had predicted .... oh well .... time to regroup and adjust to the conditions.
On the other hand .... it also becomes more of a challenge for me and it forces me to tune-in to the AO and pay better attention to it's existing conditions and structures .... this is where the experience and developed skills kick in .... "Game on"!

"Congratulations #1", on fair hooking and beaching the SFC, your (NS) new species from the surf on the LC lure! WTG! :Envious: This one is still on my bucket list.

"Congratulations #2", is in order for your (5) fifth legal Hali from your fifth consecutive session Brotha Arthur! WTG! Poseidon continues to find favor in you!
PS .... if you are not using Brotha Nate this weekend .... may I borrow wrangler Nate in order to herd a few Hali's (doggies) my way!

Thanx for the hilarious read (catching a Hali at Nate's feet ) and for the great photos of your session Sir!

Ok, First of all, as I said on Sunday - congrats on the SICK WSB. :Not Worthy: What a fish!!! Second, and more importantly, thanks for hanging out with me. It is always (mostly) :Rolls Eyes: a pleasure to fish with you. :Fishing Hole: There ALWAYS seems to be fish where ever you are, so I like when you're around. :Fishing Catch:

Now, about Sunday.... I was DEFINITELY herding the fish over to you. Last year, I had caught the 25.5" at that spot, so I knew where they were - I just wanted to give you a chance, and make you feel better about driving ALL the way down there. That's also why I didn't catch anything. I was letting YOU catch all the fish!!! See what a great guy I am? :Neener Neener:

Thanks for the "Seal Team Six" reference, but I think Don is more accurate by calling me a bobbing seal.

I hope that the next time we fish together, you return the favor. :Big Grin: Until then, mazel tov on your new species, and you're welcome for the 5 flatties!!!

Best,
Nate

BONUS REPORT #2.

6th Surf Session of the Year , 6 Different Beaches, 6th Legal Halibut...

Sunday 6/15 - The Grunion Run brings in the short Flatties!

Hit the surf early Sunday morning for a couple of hours before going to my parents for Father's Day.
Attended Sunday mass with the family and then took them all to lunch. Dad is not doing too well health wise so all the kids are trying to spend as much time as we can with him.

After lunch, I hung out at my parents home for awhile and decided to hit the surf again for an evening session.

Had pretty good success with both the morning and evening sessions. Caught a lot of fish and multiple species.
In the morning session, caught my 6th legal of the year in as many days in the surf. What was cool is that every legal Halibut I caught this year came from different beaches ranging from Santa Barbara to San Diego. :Big Grin:

The current Grunion run must be a strong one because of all the short Halibut invading the shallows. Along with the one legal I caught in the morning session, I also caught 5 shorts up to 21.5".

In the evening session, the short Halibut bite went off... it was completely nuts. I fished from 6:45pm to 8:15pm and racked up close to 20 shorts up to 21"... I lost count after 15 or 16 fish. I was shaking them off the LC as fast as I could and casting back out hoping for a legal but it was not to be... I couldn't believe it, all these shorts and not a single legal in the mix. I think there were a few legals there, but they were outnumbered by all the shorts and couldn't beat them to the LC.

Oh well, I can't complain, it was a fun session...

I ordered myself a new rod to throw the LC and picked it up Saturday from Sal at Bob Sand's Tackle in Van Nuys. Thanks Sal, Dick, Bob, Rick and the rest of the gang for always taking such good care of me.

Here it is... feels amazing!

I couldn't wait to start using it...
But wouldn't you know it, that night, my Kids (The Pugs) surprised me with another rod and reel combo. I've been eyeing this rod for awhile also.
They've been saving their doggy dollars and got it for me as a Father's Day gift. :Envious:

So of course I have to put this rod into action first. :Envious:

Here are some pics for both the morning and evening sessions. They're not in any order and I didn't take pics of every shorts, but there were well over 20 of them for the day.

Lots of nibbles is always a good thing. The salad has invaded our northern beaches, and we again are in holding pattern. Glad you got some smiles for your effort!

Hey, you weren't kidding when you said that ghost had a weird shape. I know that fish is laying flat but if you hadn't told me about the odd shape, I woulda thought the fish had arched its body.

Anyways, can't believe the numbers that you produced yesterday. I know you had to put in some mileage but that's a pretty amazing day. I thought for sure you'd pull another rabbit outta that hat in the evening. Funny that you got a picture of the bait and wait guy. He was there a couple weeks ago when I went...same guy, same position, heck, I think the same shirt. Maybe he didn't leave.

Great looking new toys you got there. Hope you enjoyed your day with your dad and the pugs!

Nice new weapons commander! Still have yet to try out a Loomis. Good rods I hear.
Even with all that salad you produced some nice fish. Salad usually ruins my outings.
Glad to see you back out and putting in more sessions.

I don't have the words. I guess "speechless" sums up your outing the best. :EyePop:

You do know that 30"+ butt that was lurking would have jumped all over that GLX, right? The big girls love Loomis!

Great job brother!

SWAT Commander Arthur :EyePop:

You never disappoint me with your uncanny ability to always be at the right place at the right time.

We could all spend a life time preparing for a fish strike ... but being where the fish are ... you are beyond being intuitive Sir ....... you are truly blessed!

You've inspired me and so many others to go that extra step .... towards unlimited possibilities! :EyePop: Really ...... 20+ Hali and 6 for 6! :Envious:

:Not Worthy:

Thanx for the amazing fish report with pic's Arthur!

PS .... my prayers are with you and your loved ones brother Arthur. I know that your father must be reflecting in the love that he receives from his entire family.
He truly has lived a blessed life, having his family and friends either near him or by his side.

We would need an amazing run of luck to catch up to you this year Ken. :Envious:
One thing for sure about luck, whether it's good or bad, that it will certainly change...

Anxiously awaiting the green light from you to head back up there Master Yoda.
I smell a big Ghost coming your way soon...

Nope, that little WSB definitely had a strange shape... didn't even fight that hard.
That was one of the rare WFO Pancakes bite that I've experienced. I was sure that there was going to be at least ONE legal in the mix, but nope.
Yeah, that guy is a regular there... cool dude, all I've ever seen him pull in are Rays, Shovelnose and Croakers...
Good luck tomorrow bro... I'll be waiting for some good news coming thru on my phone.

I tried texting you bro... Let me know if you're fishing this weekend... I might be able to sneak out on Sunday.
Honestly, I fished the Loomis and didn't like the feel. I actually prefer the Dobyns for throwing the LC.

While tossing the LC, the Loomis didn't feel right to me for some reason. The new Dobyns rod I got feels much more comfortable.
Yes, it was quite weedy, but I stuck with it... salad in the surf is my biggest pet peeve.
Hey, Daniel and Thien just picked up their Outbacks.

What a beast! :Envious:
Now, you just need to pull a barn door like that from the sand bro.
Good luck tomorrow, I have a good feeling about this one. But don't let Don pull a Jedi Mind Trick on you and turn you into a Seal. Inside joke, lol

Thanks for your thoughts & prayers Brother Dan. My Dad has lived a good long life and his Faith is strong. He's hanging in there and I leave it in God's hands.
Good luck if you fish this weekend my friend... you should be receiving a package just about now...
