Some friends invited my wife and I to go to San Diego this weekend so see the Cubs while they were in the area. Sooo, thought I'd pack some gear, and block off some time to try my hand at some bay fishing. With a little advice from benichi (thanks again), I headed our for my first shot at some bay bass.

Saturday afternoon
Low tide

With the holiday weekend I expected crowds, and there were plenty of anglers around. Most were stationary, leaving enough room to move around and find some open space. I was getting hit on the 3" Big Hammer but having trouble getting them to stick. There were tons of crabs around where I was fishing, so I switched to a drop shot to play with some of my gulp peeler crabs. Three casts later and bingo, a nice 12" spotty on the third toss. No picture of this guy since I had him out of the water longer then I like getting the hook out. Nailed a couple small sand bass and it was time to get back to the room and out to the game.

Sunday Morning
High tide

With a late night in the gas lamp, I peeled myself out of bed at 6am and headed out to another location starting in earnest around 7:00. I started with the Big Hammer again and never had to switch. The bite held on until about until about 9:30 when it began to slow down. I ended the session with 3 sand bass, 5 spotted bay bass, and 1 very short hali.

After targeting halibut in the surf so many times in the past, this shorty was a nice surprise. I cast out again, and had another slightly larger halibut follow right to the shore, but no take.

Really, I couldn't ask for a better weekend. Fun trip with my wife and friends, a rare Cubs win, and successful fishing sessions.

Tight Lines,

Tony

Thanks guys. Fishing the harbor was more fun then I expected. The next step will be taking the kayak out for some more mobility. Arthur, I know that first legal will come, just a matter of putting in the time and practice. You just make it look so darn easy .

Hi tomar19:

Thanks Nick, but I think you have me mistaken for someone else. I have fished Sunset, but no birdsnests here on the spinning gear. Still hope to meet you and our other surf brethren as I explore the coast.

Benichi, yes, the little flattie did come from where you thought it did .
