After having a success evening freshwater fishing Friday night my fishing partner(my 5 year old) and I decided we would try our luck fishing newport bay from shore. We got there around 11am to an incoming tide and fish for only about an hour. I think that we did well being that we caught several different species of fish(nothing with much size). Correct me if I'm wrong with the species identification. We caught several opal eyes and a smelt using muscles.

We also caught 1 baby calico, 1 small spotted bass, and a small sand bass(had a really orange throat).

All fish were caught, pictured and released to fight another day. The bass all came on a little trout worm with a little jig head. It's is amazing how hard these small fish fight on 2lb test versus there freshwater relatives. We also saw a bunch of these cool looking sea slugs?

I wasn't really sure what they were or toxic so we let them be. I wish we had more time to play in the sand but we had to cut it short. Thanks for reading.

Great going out there. Those are the days that make memories for the little ones. Were you guys fishing the jetty?

As to the sea slug, they aren't toxic to the touch, although I would obviously recommend washing your hands after touching one, I am sure you don't want any slime or what not in your mouth.

I can remember as a kid going down to the tide pools in corona del mar and touching them. That was when you were allowed to handle the sea creatures there.

Thanks Tony, we had a blast and yes we were at the coast guard station. We were actually checking out spots were I could launch my tube in the future. Is the current strong there? I have a caddis navigator II, so I am practically swimming in it. I don't want to be kicking for an hour just to move 10 feet. I need to get a better tube or kayak to hit the harbors with.
