View Full Version : How do you re-spool your spinning reel when it's gettin

low? Do you have a heavier test back up line to get it up to where you add the replacement line? Do you use fluoro ... or just use fluro for leaders?

My problem is I tie directly to the line. I've always unspooled the reel and re-spool from an empty spool. Seems like it's not necessary ... waste of good line ... thinkin I should but a heavy backing or something and leave space for about 75-100 yards of whatever test I need as a topper ... and tie it to the backing. Is a surgeon knot the best for this?

THANKS for any suggestions and help!!!

billy b,

you're on the right track as far as adding backing to your spool before putting on the main line. i have spools of 'economical' line at home that is used just for this reason, (and arts and craft projects). Surgeon's knot is a good knot for connecting your backing and main line.

as of a few years ago, I'm using 'shallow' spools for both my spinning (http://www.plat.co.jp/shop/catalog/images/10STELLA-1000SS-Spool.jpg) and baitcasters (http://www.plat.co.jp/shop/catalog/images/ALDEBARAN-Mg-Shallow-Spool.jpg), but unfortunately these are only available as imports. this does solves the problem of having to add backing and then your main line.

I dont know what size reel you are working with, but if it is a 2500 class spinning reel, fill the entire reel with 20lb power pro braid, then tie 6 foot flouro leaders onto it....use the albright knot and a drop of superglue. Then you NEVER have to replace the line on the reel. Further, it casts better, has less twist, and lasts forever pretty much. :-)

Very interesting idea ...

I accidentally ran across a shallow 1000 size for my Shimano Stella 1000's Works great ... any ideas as to where to get some more?

Yes, just use 15lb power pro instead....then use an albright knot to tie about a 6 foot flouro leader (6lb or so) if I am assuming this is a finesse setup. Then you only ever need to change the leader. I run this on every baitcater and spinning rig I own, except my big swimbait reel.

Only over seas. And honestly, most people won't consider buying a spool that costs as much as their reel.

Apparently the Japanese are the first to realize that a 2 pound trout or bass won't strip 220 yards off your reel. These aren't sailfish apparently.

has less twist

Crow,

Can you explain how braid has less twist?

Has anybody ever tried to put a bunch of electrical tape to cover 1/2 of the spool then put on some braid?

Crow,

Can you explain how braid has less twist?

To me, braid has zero memory, yet at the same time is nearly 100% pliable....I can literally fold it in half and it will stay that way, yet I can straighten it back out like it was never bent or folded at all. This means it wont loop twist in your reel when it is subjected to the over-twisting that spinning reels exert on line over time.

Ditto on what Stormcrow suggest.

LUVIT ... keep the suggestions coming ... I'm learning a lot. What about the tape idea ... as a backing?

I use athletic tape on my flipping reel as backing. stay away from electrical tape, too sticky and also may slip. the cloth athletic tape seems to work the best for me but the tape thing is only a good idea if your top shot is always the same diameter and length as obviously you don't want to have to add or remove tape all the time. that's why i only do that on my flipping reel. the best idea is to use braided line that is about the same diameter as the topper line you use the most. also check out my tip for measuring your top shot/backing.
