Tides and moon were looking decent for my favorite spot to fish in the dark so I spent most of saturday playing with my toys in the garage preparing for a fun night of fishing.
I got tired of waiting for the sun to go down and headed out early, around 5:30pm. I walked all the way to the end of the long jetty only to find that someone was already there!

They were kind enough to move when I got there though.

started out with a 3" bighammer and had a couple bites but nothing stuck. switched to a blue/white GULP! jerkshad and worked it along the deep side of the kelp growing on the rocks when i feel a thump. set the hook and felt the FURY! man these spots can fight. especially when they are this big.

fished the same technique until the light faded, no more action. but that wasn't why I was here, just a bonus.
I tied on a 1/4 oz finesse bass jig and put a 4" powerbait cigger craw on as a trailer, looked more like the craw was wearing the jig than the other way around.
I began working the holes in the kelp trying to get my bait to fall onto the sand just beyond the rocks. Had a few small calicos bite, landed one or two. plus a small sculpin.
I was wondering if I had wasted my time and started fishing each spot faster as i made my way back. I came to a section where I new the kelp was thinner from that point on and flipped my jig just outside the kelp but still on top of the sand shelf that follows the length of the jetty on the inside. before it hit the bottom the line jumped, I pushed the instage bar on my castatic and slowly lifted the rod until the line was tight. bump, bump... yeah that's a good one. reel down and WHAM! smash the hook home past the weed guard. took some time to work him out of the kelp but I got what I was after.

sorry for the fuzzy pic my hands were shaking.
This wasn't the biggest one but after the bite turned on i left my camera in my pocket. biggest was around 3.5 lbs.

I worked my way toward home stopping every 10-20ft. catching a fish or getting bit at every stop for the next hour and an half.

total count: 1 spottie, 4 big calico, 8 small calico, 1 sculpin.

I lost 2-3 good fish after getting them wrapped around the kelp. never lost my jig thanks to my 50lb. spiderwire stealth.
If I'm not too tired i might go back tuesday night. company is welcome but I do eat a few calico so heads up CPR guys. all spotties are released though.
Its a long walk and lots of bird poo poo everywhere but when then fish are biting its worth it.

Great job on the multiple bass! That's a long trek out to the end of that jetty! And at night! Makes me nostalgic for that place.
