Had an afternoon skunk session at SFD this Saturday. Really nice weather though. Took a walk around the lake and spotted this turtle. Wondering if anybody could identify it. Never seen anything like this at SFD before.
Some sort of snapping turtle or soft-shell turtle?

Soft shell turtle. Pointed nose, long neck, rounded back. Definitely a pet someone couldn't keep.

Hey ako

Been noticing that you fish the SFD pretty regularly. I've only started going there a few days ago and caught a decent sized one on my first day but nothing but skunz since. Is bite normally slow? I float tube it and it looks like there are prime spots in the like with grass lines and submerged structure but nothing. What's the trick to this place?

ah yeah - a pet would make sense. don't think the guy survived very long in the lake.

yeah - bite always seems slow. most i caught in a session would be maybe two fish. i walk around most of the lake. there doesn't seem to be one spot for me. seems like the bass like hiding in between the rocks, so i drag plastics over them super slow like a walking crayfish. sometimes ripping a crank bait works. nothing consistently works for me. haven't figured it out.

Hey, sorry aboutthe late reply. Been busy studying for a Department of public health Water Treatment exam and little if nnot anytime to spare. Now that it's over want to go back to Santa Fe Dam and try my luck again.. Definitely appreciate your wordsof wisdom.

The head looks correct for a soft shell turtle, but the carapace is that of a hard shell turtle. A soft shell has a flatter, smoother and uniformly colored grayish-brown carapace. Must be some alien cross-breed. :Big Grin:
