Sooo it's been about 4 months since I last hit the surf and I decided to try
my luck yesterday. I got to the first AO around 6 am and to my
disappointment the swells were enormous. I tried to find some calmer holes
but it was nearly impossible. At this point I begin to question why I wanted
to get back out in the surf again anyway. So I packed up and took a drive
to the Bass Pro for poops and giggles. I'll tell you what; there is no better
way to reignite your fire for fishing than by going to a Bass Pro! Instantly I
wanted to be back out on the water. So I headed to the Carlsbad lagoon.
It's no secret spot but it does produce a lot of halibut consistently. I don't
mind all the fisherman, I actually enjoy it since I don't have a fishing buddy.
I ended up with 2 pancakes and 1 legal(first legal of the year and only my
second ever.)

I've felt bad ever since I caught
my first legal halibut because I know it's tradition to release your first and
your PB's(along with any big females), but I kept it. So I have been telling
myself for months now that the next legal was going back. But, as you
know, most of the fishermen there aren't there for sport. It's to put food on
the table. So I had a gentlemen take my picture for this post and I gave her
to a family that had been there all day with no luck. I only fished for about
an hour and I caught more than anyone else had all day so I figured it was
the least I could do. To someone that catches 3 legals a day it might not
seem like a big deal, but it was exactly the confidence booster I needed and
I felt extremely blessed.
