So my buddy and I hopped on the Gentleman 3/4 day out of Channel Islands Sportfishing in Oxnard today. Weather was very nice and very clear. The seas were pretty rough though :(
We got an hour late start and ended up leaving the dock closer to 6:30-7am. Boat was supposed to leave at 6am. Of course, all these people start showing up late and they crowded at least 40 people on the boat (my friend heard them call "42" at one point when people were picking up their fish/fillets at the end). Actually, that's right - I just checked the angler count now: http://www.sportfishingreport.com/fish_ ... counts.php (http://www.sportfishingreport.com/fish_counts/CISC/counts.php) - 42 anglers.
Haha, I picked the Gentleman because the angler counts in the past several weeks have been 30 minus (I just checked the Island Spirit, which was easily getting 40+ ppl before and they had 23 today!) ... it always works out that way
The good news: no bananas in sight as far as my eyes could see!

All lined up and ready to go...

There were a group of these guys who lined up at the end of the boarding line late and cut in front of everybody else as we started actually boarding, hence hogging the entire stern row even though they were the last ones to sign in on the manifest   :spank: My buddy was pretty upset about that.

Nice sunrise... baaad picture. And random guy just decided to smile too.

Some good ole' Asian muggin!

The crew did a good job getting people untangled and such. They admitted that the bite has been "slow" and considering we had 42 people on board, it seemed like things were even harder. But it seems like they also wanted some more $$$ today with all the late shows and the fact that we left late... we also went far (just past the islands) and thus were forced to return earlier since we were further away. So not only was the fishing slow, but I feel we got cut short.
They only got six scoops of sardines (a few chovies in there too I think) and had 4-5 blocks of frozen squid. So that was about it in terms of bait.

We made about 4-5 stops today total. First stop, I dropped down a double dropper loop with a couple bucktails. Big big mistake - I was way to ambitious with this setup, and ignored the fact that the current was strong and sweeping my line to the back of the boat. So the second time I dropped it I caught the bottom and lost my torpedo sinker and one bucktail. I put the bucktails away after that fiasco. By this time the capt called it off and we spent an hour looking for another location.
Switched to regular double dropper and torpedo combo on the ride over the gap.
We primarily fished the main Anacapa island from that point. Second stop I believe, I brought up a decent sized tree fish and that was it.

Passing the Anacapa "arch" & lighthouse

The next stop after that was unproductive. I tried squid, anchovies, my red/white diamond jig, Gulp saltwater shrimp, shrimp flies, all to no avail...
The last stop, we spent the rest of our time at picking at whitefish, sculpin, and surprise guest appearances by mackerel. I caught a mackerel and threw it back. Next drop I caught a fair sized whitefish. Then a few drops later I picked up a couple good sized cookie cutter sculpins. All these were caught on bouncing a yellow/orange shrimp fly with squid strip off a dropper loop. The shrimp fly jighead really surprised me - I've never caught *anything* off it before! By the end of the trip, that thing was torn up.

Our combined catch: 5 fish

Anyway, sorry for the tedious read. To summarize, it wasn't the best trip. My buddy ended up with only one whitefish when he was hoping to pickup at least one rockfish on his first rockfishing trip, and lots of people on the boat skunked out. Additionally, I couldn't believe that people were actually keeping 5-incher rockfish! Compared to the Port Hueneme trip, this one paled miserably. The BIGGEST rockfish on this trip was about the size of the smaller rockfish we caught on the Erna-B! :(

I think the black guy is pulling out a grumper mackerel to try to weigh off against the biggest rockfish for the jackpot (couldn't have been more than 5lbs). He totally lost! Hahaha...

Cleaning

My final count:
1 Tree Fish
1 Whitefish
2 Sculpin
1 Mackerel (released)
0 ROCKFISH

perhaps we should stay away from the race card on this particular post. We've all met some pretty questionable people on boats. I've ran into some pretty stupid 51/50 asians in my day as well. But I wouldn't condone pointing fingers at a specific nationality. I understand Jeremy that the dude almost snapped your setup in half. I've had my super seeker setup broken (and Joe's avet scratched) by the same guy (who happened to be mexican) but it wasn't on purpose.

The only reason I make fun of Slater... that coconut (brown on the outside and white on the inside) is because he's my homey and we got history.

But ehhh... anyways, nice - legislation of a report and i'm sure you're gonna post up some pics soon.

Peace. Kevin Kim.

P.S. I love all anglers. Black, White, Brown and Yellow (and sometimes green- good for chumming). Newb's, regs, pinheads, deadheads. We're all there for the same reason.

BTW - I noticed that you managed to bag 5 fish this trip Jeremy... that's five more than you usually land on your previous trips. LOL. :D

Thanks for the report! I'm looking forward to the pics.

P.S.

Does it get rather dangerous on those charter boats with 42 angelers all casting at the same time? Are there any guidlines for that or does everyone just cast at will regardless of safety and common courteousy ?

Hi jplee3,

Really great report. Got all the info one could want! On fellow patrons, your tone was not insulting IMNSHO so you just keep telling it as you see it!

DANGER ... SLIGHTLY OFF TOPIC:

I have a buddy who is German/Russsian.Ukranian who was in the 'old country' under very repressive regimes there and he has (warned) said to me .... under the communist rule of satallite iron curtain countries .... there is a very different attitude toward authority, rules, and how one behaves toward others ....... of people who grew up and lived in those conditions. He said it's not a race or even ethnic thing .... it's the attitude towards socalization and human interaction.

North Koreans ...?? I met 3 or 4 guys ....on the Southern Cal recently that were ethnic North Vietnamese and soldiers during Americas' Viet Nam war, one of field officer grade, with whom I spoke commanded operations in an area my unit had a number of operations. He knew my unit 'the walking dead' and just gently smiled whin I told him the years I served in Quang Tri province. Kinda errie but I love all the different cultures mixing in the soup ..... whatever the life experience.

BACK TO TOPIC

Just becasue that guy was throwing plastics ....... doesn't mean he was automatically a pro ....... nope .... he's gotta throw plastics with no scent or Squid to be called that!!

Thanks for the great report,

JapanRon

Sorry guys... I guess I'll edit my post to take out the offensive stuff. I guess I was more upset than anything... much like how some of you got mad at the pole swapping jackpot winners last week :P

Anyway... didn't mean to come off as racist or anything. I just crossed the line... no harm intended here. Just thought I was 'following suit' slightly with the NK material last week but I guess I took it too far. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Channel Islands Sportfishing sucks.

Next time try the Coroloma out of Ventura. Teriffic crew and reasonble loads.

Yea, after that experience (especially after a 2-3hr drive on the way back), I highly doubt I'll be going back to that place again. I think I want to try all the places up there eventually, so if not PH again, I'll definitely give the Coroloma a shot. Although, it looks like they had only 3 less anglers (at 39!) on Saturday when I went out. But it does look like they got a few more fish than we did and with less anglers! I wonder how the quality of the fish they caught was too... nice with 7 lings I bet!

Nice pics and report.

Hopefully you'll have better luck next time rockfishing.

(what's the point in keeping 5 inch fish? Lame.)

I don't know Jeremy, but it seems that so far every trip you have taken without the NBU, things just don't seem to work out.

I think you need to jump on the bandwagon and shout "FRESHY!!!!!!!" with us. At least even if the fishing is lousy, or the peeps on board are shady or the crew is lazy...you'll get a good laugh! Cause the NBU prides itself on FUN!

As a member of the NBU, you'll enjoy:
- Entertainment as we watch Bob and Slater chew off a sardine head
- a comedy show as Terry and Bob recite lines from David Chappelle
- a good seminar on knot tying from Mike
- cooking lessons and how to eat your catch by me
- a lesson on persistent casting of a Megabait by Kevin.

With each new additional member, the show never ends, keeps growing and we all look out for each other...especially if there are some shady characters trying to win a JP with a fish caught by someone else....

LOL, thanks for the pitch Mr Junkie :D I'm tellin ya, I've been wanting to get out there with you guys but things were crazy this summer! Now that things are less crazy though and it's the Fall (one of my favorite seasons along with Winter, Spring, and Summer ), I hope to get on board the same ship as the NBU one of these Saturdays.
