I went fishing Sat. 4-05-14, with Lal on his 18’ boat the “Rubber Ducky”. We launched out of Davies in Long Beach at 5:30 am, our beginning destination being Izor’s Reef.
The forecast called for little wind, with a 2 foot swell in the morning, and very breezy conditions in the afternoon. So we knew we needed to get the job done early and get the hell out of dodge in the afternoon? We were joined at the dock by Richie with his boat “Taxfree”.
It was a comfortable ride out to the reef and the swells were as expected, under 2 feet. It was chilly, but tolerable, with no colorful sunrise, as there were way too many clouds! The water temps were very disappointing; at 55.5 and the color was an ugly pea green/brown!
We began fishing on the reef in the deep end. We were both using a combination of 4 and 5 inch plastics, with 1 to 2oz lead heads. Lal was first to hook up with a small Chocolate Rockfish. Then on his next cast he caught a small Tree fish. I caught a small Copper Rockfish. Where are the Bass?
Richie was fishing a couple of hundred yards off our bow and we saw him catch a number of sizeable Sand Bass. Several were four pounds and a couple of three’s and several Two’s. Lal got the skunk off the boat with a two pound Sand bass and then added a one pound Calico Bass.
We moved from spot to spot, with good structure readings and lots of fish marks. The Bass just didn’t want to bite for us? After three hours of torture, we got a small window of opportunity, as we found some willing biters. As we drifted past a nice reef/stone, we both got hammered. Each of us caught a decent sized Sand Bass in the three pound range:

We scratched out a Bass every now and then over the next few hours. It was slower than slow. Lal caught our last decent Sand Bass before we called it a day at high noon, as the wind was building, with lots of white caps:

We finished the day with 9 Sand Bass, 3 Calico Bass and three Rockfish, all released to fight another day.
Thanks Lal, a tough day on the Ducky, we will get them next time.
