View Full Version : S.W.A.T.(tin) Legals Back and Forth - Epic Halibut Battle!

Prologue:
It has been awhile since I had time to sit down and write up a proper report. It seems as though I have alot more free time on my hands lately, yet all of that free time has been R.S.V.P.'d by life. Does that make any sense? So....whatever little free time I have for fishing needs to count! I know that there have been a few posts about skunks, not catching legal halibut, etc... This report will be chock full of action, but if you blink, you WILL miss my point. So please sit back and enjoy the ride...

Friday 0329/2014:
AO: Classified OC Beach
Time: 6:00 am to 8:15 am
Conditions: 1 foot swells, warmer waters, light breeze, mild salad
Gear: LC's only

Had all morning to fish today. Called up my buddy Alex (aka "Hongster" if he ever registers for FNN). :Rolls Eyes:
Got to the AO and geared up fast. Started casting in the dark and were met with light salad. About 45 minutes in, I hooked into a nice YFC. About 14 inches? Let Alex have the photo op.
http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a589/benjilovers/21DF685F-7B5F-4E93-A417-A15452BA0AC0_zpshz5xpfst.jpg (http://s1285.photobucket.com/user/benjilovers/media/21DF685F-7B5F-4E93-A417-A15452BA0AC0_zpshz5xpfst.jpg.html)

The rest of the morning kind of went sour after that. Met up with Remington (aka K-dub), Kenichi and Kelly. We all scattered and kept missing bites. Something was hitting our lures but nothing committed while we were there.

My wife calls at about 8:00 am. She NEVER calls me. Something must be up. My oldest child was sick and throwing up everywhere. Alex says, "let's go...he is more important. We can fish another time." What a guy.

Sunday 03/30/2014:
Saturday morning I get texts from our scout (K-dub). He tells me that its on! Later, Don (Bachiboy) texts me. Game on guys! Even later that night, Alex calls me and says that he just got done working an overtime shift directing traffic because of the earthquakes and aftershocks. He needs some salt water therapy. Game on!!!!

AO: Classified OC beach
Conditions: Better than the day before
Gear: LC's only

Get to the spot and start casting. Salad, salad, salad...AFter about 30 minutes, we see Don and Kelly off in the distance. We head over to meet them. Don makes his FIRST cast and BOOM...a shortie!
http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a589/benjilovers/Dons_first_victim_zps208db4fd.jpg (http://s1285.photobucket.com/user/benjilovers/media/Dons_first_victim_zps208db4fd.jpg.html)

Then, Kelly hooks into one. Oh great...a short fest!

I tell Alex to get in there and get into the bite. We cast and cast. Kelly hooks into a couple of more shorts and the Don lands a BEAST in the trough in right in front of him. Alex says to me, Don really takes his time and makes it seem so easy. Yes Grasshopper, watch and learn. Don beaches the halibut and I see that this one is big! Tapes out at 28 inches.
http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a589/benjilovers/Don_legal_meas_full_zps7af99624.jpg (http://s1285.photobucket.com/user/benjilovers/media/Don_legal_meas_full_zps7af99624.jpg.html)
http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a589/benjilovers/Don_legal_meas_close_zps63035ce9.jpg (http://s1285.photobucket.com/user/benjilovers/media/Don_legal_meas_close_zps63035ce9.jpg.html)

AFter a quick release, we get back into the fun. Kelly is on fire over in his area. He lands a legal and a couple of more shorts.

Alex gets bit and loses the fish. Meanwhile, I don't seem to be getting anything right. I am bird's nesting left and right. I am casting way too close to Don and Alex (can't seem to cast straight out). Then I **** back my rod to cast and let go of my thumb. The LC drops to the sand (almost) and Don just laughs. Wow, just last Sunday, I was a super star with a 30/30 and today, I am a rookie! In fact, I hook into a nice fish and it unbuttons immediately. Don says " I saw that!":LOL::LOL::Embarrassed: I even hook into kelp and think it is a halibut. Oh my.

My goal today was to get Alex onto his first legal. Well, next thing I know, Don is coaching Alex in and his rod is full on bendo! Way to go! He beaches the fish and the LC pops out. We run to grab it and get it to safety. I quickly lay my rod down to use the taped mark. It's LEGAL! We measure and it comes to 23 inches!
http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a589/benjilovers/Alex_legal_meas_full_zps9503ea2d.jpg (http://s1285.photobucket.com/user/benjilovers/media/Alex_legal_meas_full_zps9503ea2d.jpg.html)

He decides to keep it. He is married and this is his 6th time out. Wifey was beginning to frown upon our fishing ventures. Well, this fish certainly earned Alex some hall passes.

Pay attention here! Now, I was super stoked for my friend. I was screaming and hollering. Just so proud of him! BUT--you know, I want one too. I go into prayer and ask forgiveness for feeling jealousy and coveting Alex's fish. IMMEDIATELY, I am rewarded with one of my own! I fight him onto the beach and know for sure it is legal. Tapes out at 24 - 25inches?
http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a589/benjilovers/Ken_legal1_meas_full_zps179a3c1d.jpg (http://s1285.photobucket.com/user/benjilovers/media/Ken_legal1_meas_full_zps179a3c1d.jpg.html)

Kelly hooks into another one. His rod is full on bendo but it is such a noodle rod (you saw that jab coming didn't you Kel?) I could not tell how big. I make my way over and lay my rod down for him. Yeah, it is legal. About 23 inches.

Back to it. I cast and cast. I hook into a short. Alex hooks into one but loses it. Kelly gets another short.

My turn! I get hit from far out. It doesn't fight worth a dime but it has heft to it. I beach it and Don and I measure it. I say 27 inches.

That's 14 legals for the year! Woohoo!

The bite slowed a bit after that and Alex and I had to head to church. PTN stopped by in regular clothes right as we were leaving. What? Peter, did you forget something? Silly rabbit...GET YOUR GEAR! Heard that he and Raneman did well but I will let them tell that story.

Thanks Don for taking the pics and coaching Alex this morning! Wow, he was really stoked to meet you and land his first legal! Also, Thanks Don for dialing ME in. I needed that! Kel, you were on fire today my friend! Let's do it again soon!

What an epic day!

Thanks for reading.

Skunked4life

Epilogue:
Be patient, do your homework, engage in fellowship. It is that simple. Don't fish on tilt like I did. As soon as I dialed it down (me - not the gear) and took in a deep breath and let go, I was rewarded - twice! Just breathe - right Don? That's what you always tell me? Sound advice. It will happen guys. For all of you--if you just keep at it. Don't worry about others, don't worry about how long it takes. Enjoy the ride. I forget that all too often. Tight lines everyone.

Well, put another EPIC outing in the books. The look on Alex's face when he landed that fish was priceless...the complete opposite of how you looked after missing the first few fish. Just remember, it's just fishing...have FUN brotha!!! It all comes around...and did, two-fold for you. It's a great learning experience too. Losing fish in a great bite like that will help you succeed when it's more of a "one bite, one fish" scenario. Wish we coulda had a repeat performance today, but them dang fish pulled a WSB now you see 'em, now you don't move on us. Really weird disappearing act they performed in 24 hours. Always great to spend time on the sand with all of you regardless. Hope to do it again soon!

Ken,

Is that you Santa Claus? Brother, your generosity is so very much appreciated, I hope you know that! Again, thank you for the early Christmas present. The last gift resulted in a 39" & I can't wait to see what type of giant this one will produce?

That was one Hell of a report. I think I will start calling you Hemingway. You write extremely well & it's a absolute pleasure to read your reports. I don't know what it is, but every time I share the sand with you & Don it just turns out to be a magical day for all of us! I was so happy for your friend Alex. You & Don saved the day as that fish was going back to the drink if you had not masterfully swooped in to preserve Alex's 1st legal halibut. Well done guy's you are both class acts & world class fisherman! I am honored to be able to call you both my friends. I have learned so much from your knowledge you've bestowed upon me, again, thank you!

I look forward to sharing the sand again with you both real soon!

Oh boy, you're gonna be really tough to catch, especially with my once a month surf outings, lol
You've come a long way my friend and I'm proud to see you improve as an individual and an angler.
The way you handle family life, unexpected adversities and still find time to improve your fishing game is commendable.
I shoulda fished with you guys on Sunday... my original plan to fish was a wash out... damn it!

I was looking and thought to myself, "that has to be Ken with that big hali", and sure enough it was. I enjoyed watching the show you guys put on and even inspired me to jump into my car and throw my gear on even though I wasn't planning to .

Thanks Mike. You know, I never thought 30 inches would be in my cards, but now, I may have to try for that 40 incher while its hot. You never know when the tides (no pun intended) will turn on this streak!

Dinner? No need. That is why we are posting our reports...for you guys to read and learn from the bits and pieces of useful info that we try to provide. Keep at it and maybe we will cross paths one day?

I just posted on my first hali from the surf and I have to say, you guys are killers out there!! I need me a couple of those. Awesome!!

Patience. Now that you have tasted your first halibut from the surf, the pressure lessens and the legal(s) will follow!

Hi Ken

I read this report a couple days ago but I haven't been able to type up a reply tip now. This is wat I want to say:

YOU ARE AMAZING:EyePop:

As I think about the your session reports over the last many months you've developed into a most proficient fisherman! You have put in the time (sometimes a skunk), gained skills with your bait casting reel/rig, done the reconn, honed your skills. Your the good "farmer" who is now enjoying the harvest - "That's 14 legals for the year! Woohoo!", says Ken:Shocked::Envious:

Thank you for the excellent (as I now have come to expect from you) report and congrats to you, Don and the others!!!

All the best,

Your the good "farmer" who is now enjoying the harvest - "That's 14 legals for the year! Woohoo!", says Ken:Shocked::Envious:

Thank you for the excellent (as I now have come to expect from you) report and congrats to you, Don and the others!!!

All the best,

Nick

Nick, I am a firm believer that all good gifts come from above. Thanks for your awesome reply and go hunt down some flatties! Although, I have to say, I wouldn't mind some piggy perch action while I look for #15!

This reply is mostly for Alex on landing his first legal since I'm tired of Ken putting up another one of his legal reports. LOL jk. Alex, congrats on your first legal butt. I'm sure you're hooked now and will never hit the beach again without master Ken. Don congrats on the big fish of the day. Ken, nice legals..I guess..whatever hahah

You know what? Just get me a pfd (not a pink one) so we can hunt down some 40 inchers!!!

Sick Tess on him and she'll give him a big piece of humble pie!

That's just not right...lol

Out standing results excellent job guys.. You put the wood to them again.. The relentless attack continues.. Keep the reports coming guys.. At this point I would be good with having time to fish the surf once a month.. Long gone are the days when I fished the surf every week.. Hope to get back to that point someday..

Thanks Jerry! You know only the commander can go out once a month and land a legal butt each time. Me, it takes multiple trips.
