It's been awhile since I've posted a report here on FNN and I thought it was about time to post something to share. So here's my outing for the last two nights I went out.:Cold Fishing:

AO: Classified
Arsenal: LC ESG II 77MXH rod with a Shimano Stradic 2500CI4+ (my new, awesome reel!)
Lure: LC Flash Minnow Candy Sardine and LC Surf Pointer 115MR (new product):!!!:
Conditions: Small swells, long troughs and trenches, GRUNION present, and lots of weeds but some areas clear

I decided to go back out to an old hunting ground that I have had luck with when I fished the grunion run. I asked Raney and SP Dan as well as some others and they said they would be coming to try their luck. Raney surprised me by bringing the crew, Jonathon (his brother) and Danny (Onekrzyboi). We decided to meet at my house at 930PM promptly and were on our way.

SP Dan was already there and on the water working the shoreline. We all noticed a lot of kelp on the shore as well as the water in front of us. We begin casting and couldn't keep the salad off our lures which began to frustrate us and the grunions didn't show yet. We could see Dan already way down the other end with his headlamp on and work our way to him. The swells/surge was a little high since the high tide was coming in.

We said our greetings with Dan and he had no luck either. We worked our way back in hopes of finding clear water and the salad did move out. The grunions started to show but none of us got one tap. The predators must have been sleeping or the grunions pulled a quick one on them.:LOL:

As we got closer to the rocks, I finally start to see activity on the water and saw a fish clear the water with bait boiling. That was a good sign, but I couldn't entice the fish to come after my lure. After about 30 minutes of working the area, Jonathon gets a bite and we are all stoked!

He says it feels big and sure enough, we see it and I thought it was a huge corbina. Danny yells out that it is a WSB and cheers and high fives went around.:High Five: It was about 20-22 inches. Jonathon caught his first WSB and congrats to him for catching the only fish of the night. Fish was released quickly with some quick pictures. Now stop wasting our time and catch something better!!!:ROFL:

Dan - It was a fun time fishing with you again and sorry to disappoint you again for the lack of predator activity. Fishing the grunion run is a whole different experience then surf fishing during the day and I'm glad I was able to share the time with you.

Raney, Jonathon, and Danny - Probably see you guys again this weekend.

The next day, Arthur said he was available to go this time. I was contemplating if I should go but figured "what the hell, I might as well". The run was going to start a little later and I might just end up regretting the next day for work.:Tired: I got to the area first and waited on Arthur (Wingnut), Binh and Sohka.

Binh's wife and as well as some of their friends came to experience the grunion run. Us 4 decided we wanted the bigger stuff and fished. We started to fish and conditions were the same with salad almost ever cast. The only difference tonight was that the swells were a lot smaller. The predators were asleep again with only witnessing 1 or 2 bait boils and a large fish coming out of the water.

We worked the whole stretch to no avail until Arthur screams over to me that he's on! Of course the Commander would pull a rabbit out of his hat again.:Fishing Catch: He says it feels big and is giving him headshakes. What he didn't know, the ocean was pulling a trick on him. He beaches it and all we see is kelp. But there was a fish attached to his lure as well and it was a short WSB. Not a bad fish to catch but wasn't what he was looking for.:Big Smile:

Arthur's catch with his Glow Sardine. Looks really awesome at night when you charge it up with a light.

Hey! That's a short, you know the limit!!

The grunions started to fade away and we saw no more boil activity. I suggested to Arthur that we should try the other end where the infamous hole I found last year just to try. I refused to get out-fished again by that guy!

We move over there and the structure is very different now. The hole was still there but not as great as last year. We started to work it and I decided to change up my retrieve, remembering that this hole was good at 1 feet, and lowered my rod tip with a quick retrieve. And BAM, it worked, and fish on! Pulled some drag and felt hefty with some headshakes. I knew it was the right kind, but when I started to beach it, I said, "great, its a bat ray!!"

Arthur said "no, it's a halibut." Of course he was right... and up the sand came a 22.5" butt. :Dancing Banana: It felt good for redemption for the night before. Took some pictures and back in the water it went. We were all rejuvenated again but no more bites for the next 30 minutes and called it a night or do I say morning?

Halibut with a fresh wound. Maybe a seal took a bite?

Arthur - Glad to see you come down and make it. It's a blast as always.

Binh & Sohka - Sorry couldn't get you guys on a good bite, but I enjoyed the company. Binh, thanks to you and your wife for the Denny's meal.

Sorry for the long report everyone!!

-Peter

That was a super fun night... the girls were busy chasing Grunions and the guys busy fishing, good times. :Big Grin:

Man, by the time we finished fishing, chowed down at Denny's and a long drive back, I finally got home at 4:30am and had to be in the office at 7:30am this morning.
Getting ready to leave the office right now and I felt a zombie all day. You know what? It was totally worth it.

Really tempted to head back out there again tonight for the last night of the run, but I can't...

Thanks again for the invite my friend and congrats on the legal Hali. :Envious:

Great report Peter and way to go on the legal! Good to hear that some fish came out to play last night. I was hoping you guys got into them when I heard that a group of you were gonna give it a go a couple nights ago. Glad you were able to get the Commander out there with you guys last night. Hope to be hearing more from you soon!

Hey Peter:

What a fun experience you had and a fun read too. These kind of events only happen a few times a year and you took advantage of it. Well done:Surprised: I love your persistence and your "go get em" attitude!!! And the payoff - a nice legal YAY!!

take care,

Nick

Hi ya Brotha Peter,

I not only had a great time fishing with you aka: PTN but of course with Raney (our ... "Oh! .. so close," ... SWAT prospect), Jonathan and Danny (SWAT prospect), but that I was also grateful just to get some salt spray back up in my nostrils once again! The shared time was not only accelerating but was spirit lifting for me as well! Thanx again for the invite Brotha!
Being out there was just just what the doctor had ordered. Let's do it again :Thumbs Up: on the next G-run!

I knew that you would show me how to fish that particular AO and that's exactly what you did ...... that was a well deserved legal Hali you beached on the very next night's G-run while enjoying yet another night of good friends and camaraderie with Arthur, Binh & Sohka!
WTG .... Arthur on the short WSB! .... the next time you encounter it, he'll give you a bigger more deserving fight! :Big Grin:

Peter ... you are a young man compared to me but you possess such a vast amount of skill, perseverance and dedication to our sport .... that there's much that I could learn from you my friend!

Thanx for sharing your fish report and for the collage of photos of our friends ... ta-boot! Good times!

Until next time Brotha ..... "Put your mind into free spool, loosen your drag and keep your lines tight!"

You guys are killing me...LOL

Great report Peter and as always it's great to see Arthur out on the sand leading the charge. His enthusiasm is second to none. I'm planning on getting on the sand SOMEWHERE this weekend but my local AO has been asleep still and that AO your fishing is just a tad bit too far for me and my tired SUV with 190k on it....LOL

Tight Lines to you boyz ....

Cool nighttime session! I think that's the first time I've seen WSBs landed at night. Peter, nice job on scoring a legal. Was anyone throwing the special grunion pattern LC?
