This will be a rather quick report...

I haven't been able to get out to the surf much...
With business priorities and a couple of bumps in the road of life demanding my close attention at the moment. Unfortunately, fishing always takes a back seat to these kind of things... No worries, the fish, the ocean, will always be there... waiting.

The last time I hit the surf and posted a report was February 9th... and I miss it.
I originally had family plans on Sunday to attend my niece's hockey game, but my sister called and said that they didn't make the finals of the tournament so there was no game. Saturday night, sitting at our monthly family/friends poker tournament table, Binh (Badbeat) and Sokha (Troublehook) says let's go fishing! We originally were going to take the S.W.A.T. Assault Vessel out to the Newport Harbor to fish for some Spotties, but I had to be home by noon so we decided to hit the surf instead.

Deciding on an A.O. to hit, I almost made the call to hit Halibut Heaven, the spot where Ken (Skunked4life), Don (Bachiboy), Dan (SP Dan), Jonathan (ToadsOnly) and a few other guys have been killing it on and off with the legal Flatties for the last couple of months... but decided to go elsewhere. Maybe, that was the wrong decision... :Embarrassed: Just check out Ken's (Skunked4life) report... You Da Man Ken! :Envious:

I got knocked out in 5th place at the final table and told Binh and Sokha to pick me up no later than 5:30am.
Well, I should know these boys by now... they're always tardy whenever we hit the surf. Sure enough, it was around 6:15am by the time we gassed up and hit the road. We're gonna miss the grey light.

We get to the spot and the sun was out and a few surfers were starting to paddle out. I was hoping to get a solid hour in at grey light before these guys start showing up, oh well... let's make the best of it.

Conditions: Clear and sunny morning, light off shore wind, rapid incoming tide, 2-3 ft swells, 5-10 second intervals, water temp. unknown, water clarity good, light salad condition, no bait fish presence.

Session duration: 7:30am - 9:30am. We left an hour early because Binh dropped his set-up in the surf and his Curado was rendered useless... lol

Towards the end of the session, we ran into one of my S.W.A.T Brothers, Robert (Murrieta Angler) on the sand... very cool to see you bro. It was great hanging with you for a bit and catch up on things... :Big Grin:

Binh and Sokha, I think you guys left your luck at the poker table. Better luck next time boys and try to be on time for once!

Have a great week everybody!

Arthur (Wingnut)

"I'd rather have a few days of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special..."

My 3rd Legal Halibut of the year in as many sessions...
We all have to try and chase Ken (Skunked4life), I think he's up to something like 13 legals already this year... :EyePop: :Envious:

Hi ya Brotha Arthur!

"Release the Wingnut!" WOW! ... a solid 28" .... WTG! :Big Smile::Applause: That's a very respectable looking fish Sir!
On the very same day ... both you and Ken had landed some amazing fish and had both SWAT'd me right out of my short lived lead for having the largest 2014 Halibut to date. :UDaMan: UDaMan!

That legal Hali was worth the whole trip and sharing the day with good friends ..... well, it just doesn't get much better than that! :Thumbs Up:

You were in the good company with Robert aka: Murrieta Angler, Binh aka: Badbeat and Sokha aka: Troublehook.

Reserved for later ...... OKAY It's now later ....... I went fishing during tonight's grunion run!
2:00 AM and I'm at home from fishing and I am piggy-backing your report and yes .... the grunion showed up but no Halibut encounters to report Sir.
I hooked up with Peter, Raney, Danny, Jonathan (Raney's Brother) during tonight's grunion run. Jonathan beached a short WSB, I'm guessing it to be 20-inches +. :Dancing Banana:Amazing!

I have to be up in 1 1/2 hours for work ..... so ... signing off

Very nice fish sir! I'm just glad that you were finally able to squeeze out a session. You've been due for a day out in the suds with everything going on in your life. Cap it all off with a fish like that and I'd say that you made the most of it. Things have been pretty slow out there till this last week so you're timing to jump back in seems to be right on. Hope you get in some more sessions soon!

Congrats!

Nice Arthur.. If there is one to be found chances are you will find it.. I like the fact that you could have gone for the kill but decided to save it for another day.. More so this time of year than any other with the fish headed in to spawn I would encourage others to give extra consideration in deciding to release a legal especially a larger halibut which most often seem to be (loaded with eggs) female. The bigger the fish the bigger the impact and the more fish that make it through spawn the more fish that we will have to catch in the years to come. Well done Arthur.. Nice to see you out again..
