Hello FNN, thought I'd post a report on an "unconventional" trip I recently had. Well, a few nights ago, I was rummaging through my freshwater tackle (which I never use anymore) and thought to myself, how can I utilize any or all of this equipment for saltwater use? After pondering for about an hour, I decided on testing out two rigs, this is where the experimental fishing begins:

Destination: Hermosa Pier

Target Species: Pacific Mackerel

Rig #1
1/8 oz marabou (3)
14 lb test

Rig #2
1/8 oz round jig head (4)
Crappie tubes orange/red

On the marabou

On the lead head/crappie tube

After 30 min of fishing

It was a beautiful day and the macks were biting hard. After about an hour and a half, a HUGE school showed up. There were about 15 of us on the pier and I'd say over 500 were pulled up in less than half an hour. It was just plain stupid. Most of the other guys were using sabiki rigs, pulling in 6-7 at a time but I had my fun using my strange little setup. Will try a few more experiments, will keep you posted.

Have a great weekend!!

Kept about 10 of 'em for catfish bait. Used a few for live bait with no success. Gave the rest away to the other fishermen on the pier.

Indeed!!! I believe some of the pay lakes have already been stocking some nice catties.

Good slayage... Bring a big rod next time and pin one on a 4/0 hook and a weight. Send a smaller mac back down.
Thanks for the post. DR

What fun! Mackerel on light tackle are such a blast, way under-rated. And if you bleed them like bonito and cut out the red meat, they're pretty good to eat. Thing is they have so much red meat...

Thanks DR. I tried sending one down to use as live bait with no avail. Hopefully next time.

I don't usually fish for mackerel but it WAS tons of fun. They are quite delicious but a can or two of febreeze should be nearby cuz those once they start cooking, man do they stink!!

Great job on the recycling of fresh water gear! I haven't caught macs in forever. Makes me want to go pier fishing! Thanks for posting.
